I feel like it can be a complex and nuanced ⭕issue. Obviously, there's no accounting for personal preference. Everyone ha🍃s their deal breakers.
Like, I꧃ can't do fiꦚrst-person melee in a game. And really, even in third-person I need some kind of soft-lock at least. People can feel free to make those games, and I don't think games that do that are bad - it's just not for me.
I don't necessarily let that 📖get in the way of experiencing aꦺ good game, it just has to be pretty darned good if it has mechanics that aren't my cup of tea.
For example, I played Cyberpunk 2077; I just didn't do the boxing sidequest. But I'm unlikely to ever buy Fight Night. It may or may not be a great series, and more power to them, but i🍰t's not something I'm up for.
So if playing as a specific gender is your dealbreaker because it's just not your cup of tea, then that's not 🥀something anyone should take issue with.
I think there's merit to providing more options to players, certainly. I can also see how that may complicate dev𝓡elopment. That is 2 voice act🦂ors to hire, 2 performances to capture, and double any cosmetics.
We'll likely always🎉 have games with specific characters. But ideally, then, there's a wide enough variety of both.
I thought it was a pretty fun game, personally. It oozed Star Wars atmosphere, and in comparison to recent releases like Starfield, Outlaws was at least🥂 made by an enthusiastic team ♏with a clear goal.
I liked the art direction, and Sabbac was a lot of fun. Entirely anecdotally, I didn't experien🔯ce many bugs, and nothing that prevented me from beating 🅠the game.
But I also🤪 bought Outlaws with some gift cards. Unfortunately, I think it was a pretty good mid-tier game that was priced like a "AAA"ꦦ one. If I had to pay full price, I'd likely still be waiting for it to go on sale.
Outlaws was neither a dumpster fire, ♈nor a masterpiece. I'd play a sequel, (but obviously I won't be holding my breath.)
I'm having fun - I think it's a game with a number of redeemin🌳g qualities. But it's not a $100 game, and I don't think there's any getting around that. (I had some gift cards laying around.)
Outlaws could have earned some good will with it's art direction and performances, and 🃏it establishes a very good sense of place and atmos💯phere. In some ways it's the antithesis of a lot of problems people had with Starfield earlier this year.
But it burned a lot of that potenꦑtial with that predatorꩲy pricing. Basically, I support the team that made it, but not the suits that hobbled it.
A good read - I was also t🃏hinking about Mad Max while playin𒀰g Outlaws (honestly, I think Outlaws does a better job of portraying it's source material and being a flawed-but-fun game.)
Or maybe Beyond Good and⛄ Evil would also be an apt comparison? I think if Ubisoft hadn't hobbled Outlaws with such a high price tag and season pass shenanigans, they could have had another cult hit on their hands.
There's no getting around it's not a $100 game (I got lucky and had some gift c🎶ards,) but it felt like a game that tried, even if it didn't quite live up to it's potential.
I kind of thought Outlaws would have earned a bit of grace by being nearly the antithesis of everyone's quibbles against Starfield, but I suppose I was wrong💖 about that.
I'm having fun with Outlaws. It's not e🦩veryone's cup of tea, but I don't see the dumpster fire some want to frame it as. I'd play a sequel to this.
I think 🍒she's kind of cute, still. She looks very in-line with '70's Star Wars with that haircut and jacket, and she certainly has the cheekbones for a '70's sci-fi actress.
I do agree with the article, though - the animation isn't 🔜by any means awful, but neither is it quite up to the impressive standards yﷺou'd expect from a $100+, ostensibly "AAA" title.
And it does K♔ay no favors, there. As a character, she's compelling and well-written, and the voice actress does a good performance. The animation could have really driven it all home, but it just didn't quite get there. It's far from awful animation, bu🦋t it really needed to hit that out of the park, I feel.
If this game were priced and marketed as more of a "AA" entry, I think the reception wꦍould have been a lot more forgiving of minor issues🎶 like that.
I think in t🎃his case, an argument could be made that stealth is still a good fit for Outlaws. It's an Ubisoft game, so it's hardly their first foray into stealth mechanics.
Plus I'd argue it's thematically appropriate for a Star Wars "scoundrel" to be wanting to avoid open conflict as much as possible.
