I don't see how it's predatory at all. If you don't want to spend money just, like, don't? And saying ch🎃ildren are the ones being targeted, it falls on the parents to say "no". My kids play the game with me and we've collectively spent 0 dollars. We've had it since day 1 and enjoy it without dumping money into it. Not sure what the authors issue is here.
