This article claims Joan of Arc "was a military leader who defied gender roles", which is ironic because she herselℱf debunked that in several quotes explaining what her actual role and self-identity was: during the fourth session of her trial she said she was a non-combatant who carried her banner in battle rather than fighting, and she denied calling herself a commander (since there was always a nobleman in direct command), confirmed on both points by numerous eyewitness accounts. Her actual role was similar to so many other female religious visionaries and mystics in that era : she gave advice to the commanders much as St. Catherine of Siena had advised Pope Urban VI a few decades earlier. This was an accepted role for women so long as they were approved, and Joan had been approved by a group of theologians at Poitiers in early April 1429 after Charles VII ordered her to be examined by clergy first before being given any role in the army (she was opposed by pro-English clergy, not the Church as a whole). She also constantly identified herself as the predicted "maiden from the borders of Lorraine" from a prophecy which she often recited, proving she identified as that girl and hence as female beyond any doubt🌳.
