Nintendo President Channels Xbox One's Disastrous Launch Messaging When Defending Switch 2 Pricing
For technology enthusiast that stay on top of ARM/mobile processor trends, Switch's price increase isn't shocking at all. I don't know what kind of deal Nintendo has with Nvidia for the new processors, but Tegra T239 SoCs costs estimates are 4 or 5x higher than the Tegra X1, and Nintendo in 2020 was spending $40-ish per Tegra X1. Even if Nintendo got a great deal and are paying only $160 per Tegra T239, the cost of theܫ processor is $120 more than Nintendo was paying for the X1. Nintendo also invested in faster storไage and SD Express technology, faster wifi, more tech in the cons, in the dock...
Like I kno😼w y'all are gamers and can be finicky about prices, thinking that $150 is just "too much" of a price increase because "gaming" but the tech going into the Switch 2 has costs in 2025 that didn't exist 10+ years ago when the Tegra X1 was considered bleeding edge for ARM. And some technologies just have a minimum cost of pr📖oduction.
We've seen "base" flagship smartphones go from $300-400, to $500-700, to $900-1100 in the span of 10 years, and those price increases are largely to do with the rising cost of processors and other 🃏tech that was considered the bleeding edge of mobile tech.
To anyone that's kept their eyes on ARM technology and pricing over the years, Nintendo's "dramaꦏtic price increase" is just par for the course.
