Well, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:we’re finallyꦍ getting a Zelda movie. A 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:live action one at that. I’m on the record as not 🌌really ‘getting’ the whole Zelda thing, but I still think a movie is a fantastic idea. It has been beloved since the ‘80s, and a cornerstone in the lives of at least thre✃e generations of gamers. It will be tricky to get right, but for the sake of the fans, I hope they do.
The reason Zelda is a tricky game to adapt is there’s far less narrative than, say, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:The Last of Us, and while that’s also true of Mario, you can’t just 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:cram in zany colours and needle drops to bulk up the runtime - and that’s coming from someone 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:who enjoyed 𓃲The Super Mario Bros. Movie. With it being live-action, thꦰe casting choices become even more crucial. Let’s take a look at some candidates.
Big Names, Link
Let’s get the obvious one out of the way. If you’re not terminally online, Tom Holland is a popular box office star, and as far as Sony is concerned he has proven he can draw a crowd through Spider-Man and Uncharted. I still don’t think he’s a good c🐈hoice (he’s currently too recognisable as Spider-Man and hasn’t shown the range to differentiate his performances enough), but he’ll probably be in the conversation.
Another name I’ve seen mentioned a lot is Timothee Chalamet, with his boyish good looks and elfish charm. I love me some Chalamet, and might be the only person on Earth excited for Wonka, but I’m struggling to see it. Chalamet typically has confidence, maybe even a touch of arrogance, way beyond the earnest himbo of Link. He has more range than Holland, but the 🅷casting would be against type.
My personal pick would be Thomas Brodie-Sangster. He looks the part the most and played a similar character in Game of Thrones, as well as bringing box office experience from The Maze Runner. He’s not as famous as Holland or Chalamet, but he’s not ꦑan unknown either, and this role could define his career.
Wes Ball, director of The Maze Runner, is a𝓡lso directing Zelda. Thomas Brodie-Sangster may be a secret frontrunner.
Big Names, Zelda
Florence Pugh and Saoirse Ronan would be my first picks for most roles, but I think I could make a solid case for both of theꦦm. Both were in the running for Dune’s Princess Irulan (the part eventually went to Pugh), a character not dissimilar to Zelda, and are two of the brightest 20-somethings in Hollywood right now. Box office experience, comedic chops, and Oscar nominations (four for Ronan) to their name, they would be huge gets for Zelda.
Anya Taylor-Joy may also be a candidate, but Nintendo may want their Peach and Zelda to be a different person. Her Last Night in Soho co-star Thomasin McKen😼zie m🧸ay also be in consideration after impressing in Jojo Rabbit and The Power of the Dog.
Breakout Stars, Link
Though being cast as Link or Zelda would overshadow anything in Brodie-Sangster or McKenzie’s career, they’re still established stars. Nintendo could do for some smaller names, and if so, impressing in The Power of the Dog could be important again. Kodi Smit-McPhee would be an excellent choice if Nintendo decides against an A-list name, although looking at the Mario cast, that seems unlikely.
David Corenswet might not be a lesser light for long, given he’s the new Superman, but he wouldn’t be the worst choice in the world if they want ‘Chalamet but not Chalamet’ for the role. Nicholas Hoult, who missed out to Corenswet for Superman (and Robert Pattinson for Batman) might be in the running, but I think the col😼d streak will continue here. All of the other choices so far have skated around Link’s himbo status, but if they wanted to𝓀 lean into it, Top Gun star Glen Powell would be an excellent pick.
Breakout Stars, Zelda
I’m not sure Zegler counts as a breakout star - maybe her and McKenzie are the wrong way around - but either way she may be in the running. Impressive (if outshone by Ariana DeBose and Mike Faist) in West Side Story, Shazam: Fury of the Gods then cr🍒ashed and burned, but with Hunger Games and Snow White coming soon, she could see her stock skyrocket.
Zegler is the latest unfortunate woman to become internet enemy number one after , which may make Nintendo wary. Less controversial (and less famous) would be Kaitlyn Dever, longtime fancast for TLOU🍨’s Ellie building a quietly impressive career, who is due a big break. Joey King, who played a character similar to Zelda in The Princess (admittedly a terri🍷ble movie), would also be worthy of consideration.
Younger Casting, Link
Link’s age is hard to pin down, and there will b🐈e a much greater focus on that since the movie is live-action. Most of the choices we’ve looked at have been in their late 20s to 30s, but what if Nintendo and Sony go younger?
Jacob Tremblay is a bit of a default choice for any young leading character, but part of that is because he’s really quite goodᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚ𒀱ᩚᩚᩚ. Jaeden Martell would also be an interesting choice, and will likely go head to head with Sophia Lillis as for which It kid will have the best career. I fear Finn Wolfhard has peaked. Jake Ryan, who awkwardly stole some scenes amongst the stacked cast of Asteroid City, would also be an interesting pick.
Younger Casting, Zelda
Looking at the established younger names who fit the mould, there seems to be more options for Zelda. The aforementioned Sophia Lillis has proven she has a life beyond It through the likes of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Dungeons & Dragons, and could be in with a shot.
168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Fancasts often rely way too ꦗmuch🐼 on visuals (this character is blonde, so someone somewhere will have suggested Sabrina Carpenter), but it’s hard to overlook the resemblance Hunter Schafer bears to Zelda. The Euphor𒁏ia 🎐star, like Rachel Zegler, also stars in the soon-to-release Hunger Games movie. She has an ethereal, elfish presence, but with all of the controversy over Lightyear’s gay kiss, the studio might want to avoid casting a trans person.
Elsewhere, though Millie Bobby Brown has become the most famous of the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Stranger Things crew, Sadie Sink has been most praised for her performance. In Stranger Things and The Whale, Sink displays a spikier demeanour that would suit a Zelda more in the vein of Anya Taylor-Joy’s Peach. Lastly, Angourie Rice could be set for a breakout this January in Mean Girls. She already has links with Sony through her supporting role in the latest 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Spider-Man tr👍ilogy, and is an outsider if the studio opts for someone with experience, but not to the point it would overshadow the role.
If you asked me to pick my personal preference, I'd say Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Hunter Schafer. Both have space to grow into the role, fit nicely into Zelda's fantasy aesthetic, and have a lot of talent that feels untapped in the mainstream.
Whoever they cast, it’s hard to please all of the people all of the time. But if you’ve been waiting for a Zelda movie this long, it’s probably worth givinཧg whoever they cast a chance. Yes, even if it’s Tom Holland.
