The Xbox Series X and Series S both accept a range of different headsets. You can use wireless or wired options and can also connect via Bluetooth. However, there are a few things you'll need to check 𓄧for before you purchase a headset, mainly that they are compatible with Xbox Series X|S.
This guide will go over the basics of how to connect each type of headset, and how to fix common issues.
What To Check Before You Buy A Headset
The most important thing you need to know is that while the vast majority of headsets marketed at console users are also compatible with PC and Switch, Xbox and PlayStation headsets are not interchangeable. Both consoles use different technologies, and while it's not unreasonable to assume that something as simple as a headset would work with either platform, this is not the case.
You'll need to check the packaging carefully for a sticker or slogan that says "compatible with Xbox Series X|S" as unless you see this on the package, you cannot be certain that it will work. Some brands colour code aspects of the packaging in green to denote Xbox and blue to signify PlayStation. However, while this can be a useful starting point, you cannot rely solely on this.
Razor is a well-known headset brand and its signature colour is green. This means it's especially important to double-check any Razor headset to ensure compatibility.
How To Connect A Wired Headset
The Xbox Series X|S controllers all contain a 3.5mm jack port. This means that they can be plugged directly into any controller paired with your Xbox and will work straight away.
If you need to adjust the settings then follow these simple steps:
- Press the Xbox button on your controller
- Navigate down to the bottom right of the pop-up menu
- Select Audio & Music
Here you'll be able to change the headset volume, mix between game and voice audio, and adjust how much you can hear your own voice. Just move the sliders until you get the right balance.
How To Connect A Wireless Headset
There are two ways to connect a wireless headset, via USB dongle or via Bluetooth. Some wireless headsets offer both options, so with these the best thing to do is try both connection methods and see which works best.
You may even find that a wireless headset can be connected via 3.5mm plug as well, so you can continue playing while it charges. For these headsets simply plug in when required.
When using the dongle you will need to plug it into the USB port on your console. Then check your headset for the power button and switch it on. Once the headset is on press the pairing button on your dongle. Usually, this will connect the headset. If it doesn't, there is likely to be a pairing button on the headset as well that you need to press.
Once connected the headset should be visible in the Accessories menu under Settings > Devices and Connections > Accessories. Your wireless controllers will appear as the default but when you click along you should see any connected headsets as well. Selecting them here will also allow you to access the audio settings.
How To Connect A Bluetooth Headset
Bluetooth connections work similarly to wireless ones, except you don't need to plug anything into the console. Simply press the Bluetooth button on your console and the one on your powered on headset and the two should pair up.
You can tell the Bluetooth is pairing since the console power button will flash, as will the power button on the headset in most cases. Once this process is complete, turning on a paired up headset will also turn on your console.
Common Issues And How To Solve Them
This all sounds simple enough but issues happen. Whenever you have problems there are a few things you should always check first:
- Is the headset plugged in or turned on?
- Is it connected to the console?
- Is your network connection stable?
- Does the problem resolve itself if you restart the headset and/or console?
Once you've checked all of the above are ok then there are some other solutions to try, depending on the problem.
Several of these solutions require you to go to the Accessories menu. This can be found under Settings > Devices and Connections > Accessories. Once there, scroll along to your headset and hit the Configure option.
