Best Soulslike Games Easier Than Dark 𒅌Souls
These s𓃲oulslike games have an easier learning curve than most.
The Great Centipede is a po🌸werful boss, and quite different from any you have fought so far. With how large they are, it is easy to get hit by their wide-reaching attacks, especially with how deceptively fast they are, too. However, it all comes down to learning their moves. Once you get the hang of those, you'll learn that the Great Centipede is not that great after all.
Where Is The Great Centipede Fought?
The Great Centipede is battled in the Bandit Cave, which itself is found at the very end of the Mercury Mines, which are originally accessed through the underground passage of the Shu Sanctum. As defeating the Great Centipede opens the way to Doomwillow Beach, they are mandatory to defeat.
However, with the Great Centipede being so difficult, they graciously put a shrine right outside its arena. The Bandit Cave is exceptionally small, containi💖ng almost exclusive♛ly the Great Centipede boss fight.
Preparation For The Great Centipede
For the most part, there's not too much you need to prepare for with the Great Centipede. Like with other bosses, 🍨Shimmer is the one essential you need, though you are given this by default in the Impetus Repository. Mastering your dodges is key to keeping up your Skyborn Might regardless of the weapon you use, so bear this in mind.
The Great Centipede can also release a cloud of purple mist that rapidly builds up your Corruption, so make sure to equip some Purple Camelias to your item slots. You should have found plenty of these wh🙈ile exploring the Mercꦇury Mines.
When you drop your Red Mercury after dying in a boss fight, your Inner Demon will not spawn no matter how high your Madness is. So don't be afraid t༺o raise your Madness to increase your damage for boss fights.
The next, and possibly most important item to equip, is the Dracolich Pendant. This can be found in the early sections of the Mercury Mine, and prevents enem💦y roars from causing you to flinch. If you are made to flinch, you will have to rapidly press the dodge button to break free, leaving you open to attacks. If fully nullified, however, it gives 🗹you ample time to attack the boss while they are roaring.
Beyond these, the rest is up to personal preference. Great Centipede uses quite a few slashing attacks, so equip armour that raises those resistances if you feel you're taking too much damage. It doesn't seem to h𝄹ave any other particular weaknesses, though having some ranged Spells is always handy.
Great Centipede's Strengths And Weaknesses
The Great Centipede does not seem to have any particular defenses you have to worry about, so any damage types you bring should be equally effective against them. They also tend to pause after quite a few of their moves, so even weapons like the Axe can find a use here withဣ their high damage-dealing potential. With how suddenly the Great Centipede attacks at times, being able to block can also be helpful if you can't get your dodge timing right against certain attacks.
That said, the Great Centipede does have some powerful attacks of its own. With its claws it will deal heavy Slash damage, and this makes up the bulk of its attacks. To this end, is may be worth equipping armour that increases these resistances to give yourself an easier time. They also have an attack that summons a purple cloud that causes Corruption build-up, so raise this resistance if possible, and a💎lso bring along some Purple Camelias.
Finally, the Great Centipede can also summon a massive magic circle once their HP have been lowered enough. This attack is relatively slow but deals magic damage, and the boss is free to move while it strikes you. As such, try not to skimp on your maﷺgic resistances either as this can easily shred through you if you're only🔜 focusing on dodging the boss.
Blightweaver - Great Centipede's Moveset
While the Great Centipede has quite a large set of moves, the majority of them are focused around its claws, which primarily deal slash damage💛. Here are all of the moves in more detail:
Attack |
Description |
Counter |
---|---|---|
Claw Advance Dash |
The boss will dash towards you whil🃏e slamming their pincers into the ground.✅ Performed while Wuchang is at a distance. |
Move towards the boss wile doing this, dodging into the attac꧃k. They will struggle to change direction, giving you ample time to attack from behi﷽nd. |
Tail Swing |
The bo😼ss will spin 🍸in place to slightly reposition while attacking you if you are in their vicinity. |
The boss rubs their cཧlaws together before performing this spin. Use this as a sign to dodge towards the boss, keeping you near them to attack after the spin finishes. |
Leap Slam |
While at a distance🉐, the boss may leap at you 🦩suddenly to close the gap. |
This move has great tracking, so don't try to ওrun from it. Instead, dodge just before the boss land to keep close to them. |
Claw Grab |
The boss will reel back wit🍌h its claws before diving forwa𝐆rd to grab you. |
This attack can lock you ꦓinto a grab, so dodge away from th♋e boss for safety. Its range is relatively short so it should be easy to avoid. |
Claw Swipes |
The boꦉss will perform a series of qu𝔉ick slashes right in front of itself. |
Dodge to the side to avoid getting hit by extra attacks after moving close to ๊the boss. |
Magic Circle |
After the boss' HP is lower🍎ed, it's human portion can summon a massive Magic Circle that fires beams independently of the boss. |
Keep on the move once the circle appears. Though it has tracking, it𒁃 is fairly poor at it. As long as you keep moving, you can focus your attention on the boss. |
Death From Below |
The boss buries itself beneath the ground, p🌠erforming four attacks before ascending again. |
You cannot damage the boss in this state, so focus on d𝐆odging. As soon as the ground turns orange, dodge immediately. Any later and you will b🍬e hit. Keep moving to raise your chances of avoiding the attack |
Corruption Mist |
The boss will summon a cloud of purple mist to🎃 hide inside that also causes Corruption build-up. |
Once the cloud appears, run as far from the boss as possible. This is likely to bait the boss into doing the Leap Slam, which gives yo🐠u more time to dodge compared to other attacks. |
Roar |
Rarely, the ಌboss will roar, causing you to flinch, while dealing🐬 very low damage. |
This attack can ne ♌completely negated by equipping the Dracolich Pendant, giving you plent🔯y of time to unleash powerful attacks on the boss, like Charged Heavies. |
Foot Slam |
Sometimes while s🍨tanding directly on either side of the boss, they will raise their legs to slam you doꦍwn. |
You can dodge this attackꦅ, or use the charge-up period to run to another side💝 and attack them. |
Tail Swipes |
W🧔hile directly behind the boss, they will whip their tail around a few times to attack you. |
When this attack𒈔 in in motion, run to the front of the boss to deal damage while they are locked in the animation. |
Charged Tail Spin |
While at a distance from the boss, they will grab their tail in their mouth to charge🐓 it up, dealing high damage and traveling a long distance once unleashed. |
This attack is very hard to read, so you would be best blocking or using the Flickering Blade Discipline Skill if you have ☂it. The bos🅠s has a long cooldown afterwards, however. |
As you can see with the above, dodging is the bread-and-butter of surviving this boss. They can close the gap with you quite rapidly, so it's worth st🥀aying close to them at all times, on🍃ly breaking away when they start summoning Corruption mist.
How To Beat Blightweaver - Great Centipede
The Battle
The hardest part of battling the Great Centipede is endurance. They hit hard, but not exceptionally so. However, they do have quite a large pool of HP, and as such most of the battle will be spent whittling them dow🍰n bit-by-bit, rather than exploitingꦜ a weakness.
Since they are so large, you will likely end up at their back or front quite frequently. You can choose to lock on to either end of them as well, so make sure to adjust your targeting to make your attacks more accurate based on where you are in relation to the boss. Both 𓄧ends take a similar amount of damage too, so always take the opportunity to attack.
Since you have to stay quite close to the boss, it is best to keep attacking them to break their stance. Once the circle around the lock-on dot fills in, you can use an Obliterate attack on them. Stagger build-up only reduces if you stop attacking the boss for a while, so cons🐼istently attacking means you will♓, at some point, break their stance and get to deal some high damage.
Obliterate attacks are Wuchang's term for critical hits on an enemy after their stance has been broken.
However, your attacks are not the only way of damaging the boss during this fight. Around the arena are a series of pillars. While you can't do anything to them yourself, causing the boss to dash into them will deal quite a large chunk of damage to them, and will leave them stunned for a 𒈔few seconds. This is a great chance to double down on the damage. So if you feel like you're getting low on HP yourself, try luring the boss into these pillars to take down their HP in a safer way.
Other than this, it is just learning the boss' tells to learn how to avoid its attacks. And don't forget to raise your Madness to both increase your damage 💛and♓ activate some perks from the Impetus Repository.
The Rewards
After defeating the Great Centipede, the way forward will open into Doomwillow Beach. You will also be given a variety of items, a few of which will be added to your inventory quite ꧃quickly, making them easy to miss. These include:
