That's an unfair standard to hold most games to, but I'm not so sure it's an unfair expectation for BioWare and Obsidian. These are studios that — between KOTOR and Fallout: New Vegas, Mass Effect and Tyranny, the Baldur's Gates and the Pillars of Eternities — have made some of the most acclaimed RPGs of the last 25 years. BioWare set the template t💟hat Larian used for Baldur's Gate 3, and🎶 Obsidian has made some of the best-loved games in that subgenre. If we can expect anyone to top Baldur's Gate 3, it's them.
But what would it actual🌞ly look like to improve on last year's near-unanimous GOTY, the laꦇndmark RPG that emerged out of early access to take over the world, bringing in players who had never touched a crunchy RPG before and converting non-gamers into people who spend hundreds of hours on a single game? What made Baldur's Gate 3 so uniquely good, so universally beloved, and so damn sticky that we're still constantly talking about it nearly a year after release? And what would it mean for a studio to improve on it?
What Makes Baldur's Gate 3 So Special Anyway?
Of course, companions are the key to Baldur's Gate 3's lon💎g viral half-life. Baldur's Gate 3 could boast all of its combat and roleplay accomplishments, but without vivid characters like Shadowheart, Astarion, Karlach, and Lae'zel, that players love to romance, ship, make art of, and write fanfic about, it wouldn't have kept the online hive buzzing for nearly as long. Any challenger to the RPG throne will need to invest in its characters, spending the time Larian clearly did to make them feel real.

Equally important, it has a compelling reason to bring those characters together. I'm stoked for Avowed, but was bummed to see how boilerplate its plot set-up is. Your character's main quest is to get to the bottom of what's causing a mysterious plague. That isn't especially fresh and, in comparison to Baldur's Gate 3's tadpole ticking time bomb that brings together selfish characters w༺ho would otherwise kill each other, I just don't expect to be compelled by the main quest. RPGs are often criticized for having side quests that surpass their main quest, but Baldur's Gate 3 manages to weave it all into one big cohesive journey, the main quest a sturdy spine from which hundreds of side quests extend like nerves.
Larian Mastered Roleplay With Baldur's Gate 3
But the most impressive thing about Baldur's Gate 3 is its emphasis on the role-playing aspect of a role-playing game. The game is yours to play as you wish. You can be good or bad, sure, but RPGs have been offering that kind of dicho🐬tomy for a long time. Baldur's Gate 3 manages to be much more nuanced, often providin🌳g a half-dozen dialogue and action options in any given situation.
My first taste of this flexibility came while I was still on the Nautiloid ship. Early on, you can encounter a man with the top of his head removed, his brain exposed. You can speak to the brain, and this brings up a variety of options in how you deal with it, each allowing for minor gradations in who your character is. You could talk to the brain, you could inspect it. If you choose to remove it, you could gently pry the gray matter out of the head, or you could smash the skull. Both accomplish the same goal, but I had decided during character creation that my character was a good-natured punk, someone who loved gnarly, nasty stuff, but had a good heart. I was delighted that I could bring that to life by being a) kind, by freeing the brain, and b) a bit of a brute, by smashing the skull to𓄧 get it out.
The 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Dark Urge origin is a great example of this nuance. Durge is plagued by ev꧂il thoughts, but you still have the option to play🍸 them as someone who resists temptation if you choose.
This was the biggest bummer when seeing Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which opts for a simplified approach to roleplay, much more in line with an RPG-lite like Horizon Zero Dawn. The game that dethrones Baldur's Gate 3 will need to go deeper, offering even more ways to embody your character. 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Disco Elysium is one of the few games that can comp𒁃ete on this front, and I suspec♑t that the game that improves on BGS will have put in the work studying ZA/UM's detective RPG.
Do these games need to top Baldur's Gate 3? Not necessarily, but it's hard to argue that Starfield wasn't hurt by launching in such close proximity to an RPG that outclassed it so thoroughly. I'm sure I'll still enjoy RPGs that come out in the near f𝔍uture, because every game has its own strengths and weaknesses. But, fairly or not, Baldur's Gate 3 has becomeꦬ a benchmark, and any game attempting to compete has its work cut out for it. And Avowed and Dragon Age are undoubtedly gunning for the same audience that made Baldur's Gate 3 a phenomenon.
