168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Grand Theft Auto 6 should be everything I hate. I'm always complaining about games taking too long to develop, and the GTA series is Exhibit A. In the early '00s, Rockstar put one of these games out every year or two. But as the 2000s became the 2010s, the studio switched to a one-game-every-console-generation model. It's been seven years since 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Red Dead Redemption 2, and 12 years since GTA 5.

If I was talking about another developer, I might say, ‘And for what?’ But the thing is: I think GTA 6 looks incredible, and if Rockstar handles ඣit likeꦜ GTA 5, it will have been well worth the wait.

"Shorter Games With Worse Graphics"

Sometimes you hear a phrase once and it immediately rewires your brain. ‘I want shorter games with worse graphics made by people who are paid𓄧 more to work less and I'm not kidding’ wasn't one of those 𓆉phrases for me.

The first time I saw back in 2020, I agreed with parts of it. As a lefty, I obviously wanted the people who made games to crunch less and get paid more. But the ‘shorter games with worse grap🐲hics’ part? I wasn't ready to get on board with that.

Ellie and Dina in The Last of Us Part 2.

Mallory made said tweet on June 29, 2020 and some context has been lost in the half-decade since. That tweet came ten days after the launch of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:The Last of Us Part 2, a game that kicked up a sh*tstorm of discourse in its wake. The Last of Us Part 2 was everything the tweet was standing against: a game that was twice as long as its predecessor, ridiculously graphically detailed, and made by developers at 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Naughty Dog who had, , crunched hard to get the game out 🍃on time.

If the comparison point is The Last of Us Part 2 and Naughty Dog's earlier games, I would happily trade one 25-hour game (no matter how much I love it) for a few 12 hour games in the same timespan. The Sony prestige model of linear action-adventures doesn't benefit from being twice as long. The Last of Us Part 2 benefits the most, because it allowed Naughty Dog to tell two game-length stories with two opposing heroines. But 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:God of War Ragnarok? Easily twice as good if it was half as long. Most linear games are better if they cap out at 12-15 hours because a straightforwardly told story doesn't really fit comfortably into a 2ಞ5 hour frame.

Unless it's episodic. A 25-episode season of TV works because each episode is telling its own self-contained story while still advancing the overarching plot and, though episodic games obviously exist, they'r👍e closer to the 10-hour length of streaming shows.

The Grand Theft Auto Difference

The Vice City sign in Grand Theft Auto 6.

But open-world games are aiming ⛦to be, well, worlds. When I play The Last of Us Part 2, I'm there for a well-told story and a linear, level-based structure supports that. When I play GTA 6, I'm there for a well-told story, sure. But the appeal is experiencingꦐ that narrative in-between immersive exploration in a fully-realized world.

Most open-world games don't succeed at this. 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Assassin's Creed Shadows would likely be better if it was smaller because its world is filled with repetitive content, the same mission types appearing over and over, with little to differentiate the ones you accomplish in Iga from those in Wakasa. Bloat is a problem for more checklist-y open-world games 🌳because it just ends up feeling like bigger games me꧃an bigger checklists.

There's been a sentiment floating around online that the recent trailer shows the game to be too focused on pointless realism — with the bubbles that can be seen fizzing up in Lucia's beer emerging as a focal point. And while I don't necessarily disagree that these kinds of details can yield diminishing returns, Grand Theft Auto 6 being really big and incredibly detailed is kinda the point. This is a series that now launches once a decade, and is using that time to serve up a world that feels as close to real as possible, while filled with possibility. Feeling like Rockstar thought of everything — even the beer bubbles — is key to it selling 🦋that fantasy.

Most games shouldn't do this. And maybe Rockstar would be better off if it made ‘shorter games with worse graphi﷽cs’ that it could release every few years going forward. But since we've already waited 12 years for GTA 6, I'm e✤xcited to play the biggest, most detailed version possible.
