Summary
- Only 10 tracks from the original games are in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 remake.
- Tony Hawk personally chose new songs for the game's soundtrack... Or so he says.
- THE ACE OF SPADES, THE ACE OF SPAAAAAAADES.
I told my best friend Luke as we left school that I’d stop by Walmart before coming over. The clerk, who I knew fairly well, said he’d hold a copy of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 until I could come in. The two of us had been talking about the game nonstop during the summer–the first 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Tony Hawk's Pro Skater game of the 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:PlayStation 2 era. We were beyond read♓y. 2001 was to be the ‘Year of the🐻 Hawk’.
And while I’ve forgotten the details of those marathon HORSE play sessions with my hig𒐪h school best friend, I remember how it made me feel. Mainly, the way the soundtrack burned the game so deep into my brain that one of the last things I’ll probably hear before I die is Ace of Spades by Motörhead.
Consider🃏 my shock, then, when I was ready to be amped up aga𒐪in, looked at and was dumbfounded.
Your eyes don’t deceive you: Of꧟ the tracks from the original two ga💯mes, only 10 tracks carry over to this remake.
Birdman, why? Why did you forsake the soul of what made these games so rad in the first place? I won’t mince words: The 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series isn't the same without those origina🦂l sounds playing over my attempt to keep grinding rails in Canada for as long as possible.
Let’s look at what caused this massive bail-out.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 = A Sonic Letdown
"These days, it's just what I think fits and what I'm interested in," 168澳洲幸运5𒆙开奖网:Tony Hawk himself said in an interview about the lack of soundtracks from the original games in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3🅷 + 4. "I'm not the only decider in these soundtracks, but I did manage to throw a couple of bands in there that I was stoked on, like Fontaines D.C., IDLES and an old one, X-Ray Specs. So those are three that are definitely my personal input. And I also picked songs by artists that were already in the game, but a different song."
C’mon, Tony. Personally, I don't believe for a second you were responsible for any of the music involved. The spirit and power of these remakes rely on taking the player to a time and place. Not only is the music a reflection of an era, but truly the tracks are sense💫-memories for me and many otherꦉs. I remember the first time Ace of Spades blared as I ripped up a course.
As a sheltered 16-year-old kid ꩲin Appalachia, Del The Funky Homosapian was one of the first rap acts I was exposed to, and it was thanks to THPS. I would never have heard The Ramones at that age without Tony Hawk 3.
Those songs mean something to me. So the fact that they were omitted, or in some cases, replaced by lesser songs by the same artist, immediately harshed my buzz for playing the game. Not to go all militant, but this is why game preservation especially matters when it ꦰcomes to an entire generation of licensed titles that we’re slowly beginning🐠 to lose.
And I’m sure that’s what this all boils down to: licensing. I’d have more respect for Hawk and company if they had just come out and called it a licensing issue. “✨We tried our best, but here’s some stuff instead🅠 that we hope can create new memories.” Easy.
Instead? It sours theജ experience. It makes me think of other licens♛ing disasters, including one near and dear to my heart.
On Daria, MTV, And The Licensing Nightmare
One of the darlings of the late 1990s MTV era, Daria was an animated show about a specific place and time. Its look into the live❀s of the Gen X slackers who ruled culture also feels like an honest and authentic reflection o✃f the times.
Of course, one thing was glaringly missing when the show would finally see a home release on DVD in 2010. There are three things people often bring up when it 🃏comes to Daria. The pedigree with Mike Judge’s major 90s show, Beavis & Butthead. Daria herself, a sardonic icon to this day. A﷽nd the soundtrack, packed to the gills with the songs of the MTV TRL era.
Alas, the DVD release lacked any 🔥of the original placement of tracks. Why? The creator, Glenn Eichler, included a full note on the release. Bluntly, he said, "Replacing the music had to be done. Does that mean this box set is compromised? Season 1 Daria would have said, ♏‘Yes.’ Season V Daria would have said, ‘Shut up and pass the remote’.”
Season 1 Daria sounds like she knows what she is talking about. If the lack of the original soundtr🥃acks in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 is all about lic🍌ensing, then I get it. It sucks, but I understand. However, that doesn’t change the fact that it makes this game harder to pick up.
ꦓI also love Daria, but I never finished going through all of♊ those DVD discs either. Why? Something felt off. Wrong. And so is the case with these two iconic soundtracks stripped away. This music was formative to me and my tastes. Now it’s just a casualty of profits and the idea that “new is always better.”
But we did get . T🦩hat rocks. Small victories, I suppose.
