Well, this is an interesting turn of events. In the wake of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered, fans were crying out for more: namely in the form of Tomb Raider 4-6. I 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:wrote at the time that we didnღ't n𓂃eed them, or really any further 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Tomb Raider remasters. I thought, perhaps a little smugly, that I'd be proven right and we'd never get them. But this week, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Tomb Raider 4-6 Remast👍ered was indeed announced, targeting a re🔯l♓ease date of Feb 14, 2025 - exactly one year on from Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered.
My position on it, broadly, has not changed. While the first three games are a cohesive trilog✅y, the next three games all run in different directions. Tomb Raider 4 (actually The Last Revelation) belongs with the trilogy in what is more accurately a quadrilogy. Tomb Raider 5 (actually Chronicles) is a flashback game, following on from - spoilers - Lara's death in The Last Revelation, which - spoilers - she survived. It's sort of connected to the original four tit꧑les, and it walks and talks like them, but it's not a perfect fit.
Then we have Tomb Raider 6 (actually Angel of Darkness). This was a hard reboot for Lara, and 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:while more fondly remembered now, was so disastrous 21 years ago that the entire direction was thrown out. 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:It was stylis༺♉h, but did little else right. This was more successfully given a soft reboot with Legend, followed by Anniversary (the first game in the Legend style), and then Underworld. 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:After that complete trilogy, we had the Surv🍸ivor trilogy of 2013, Rise, and Shadow. And now, we are waiting for what’s to come next.
The Lack Of Tomb Raider Games Makes Remasters More Palatable
This wait is why, despite not feeling we needed any more Tomb Raider remasters (and getting some pretty personal insults thrown my way because of it), I'm still glad they exist, because I know they will make my fellow Tomb Raider fans happy. Even the ones who are mean. Shadow released in 2018, and aside from the vague tease that it will unite the Survivor and Legend trilogies, we know nothing about. 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:We're starving out here. Mayb🌜e that's why people are mean - you're not you when you're hungry.
The fact that Tomb Raider has failed to satiate is the reason many fans want these remasters. A general disappointment with Shadow and Crystal Dynamics/Square Enix's handling of the series oౠverall has not bought any good graces. The recent acquisition of Tomb Raider by Embracer (who then partnered with Amazon) didn't move the needle there either. But that exact same reason fans want this remaster to fill the void is the reason I don't.
The new Tomb Raiders and these remasters have a different dev team. Crystal Dynamics is still on new new Tomb Raider under Amazon's watch and Embracer's roof, while Aspyr (also under Embracer's roof)♎ made the remasters. There's not some dev at a desk deciding which game to spend time on and opting for polishing th🎐e streets of Paris while the new game rots.
Easy Remasters And Massive Triple-A Games Are Not The Only Options
However, since everything is under the financial might of Embracer, we could have been getting new games. A Tomb Raider game probably shouldn't take six years and counting to even get a trailer out, but if it must, then surely smaller spin off games could fill that void. Artistically, and in terms of player enjoyment, these would be better games. The originals would still exist, so no one would lose out, and fans would get something fresh. However, they wouldn't be as reliable in terms of sales as a remaster, so all🅺 we get are the microwaved leftovers of the '90s and '00s.
To fans who have played these games before and who are looking forwa𓄧rd to diving back in, good luck to you. I think we have forgotten how middling Chronicles was, mostly because Angel of Darkness was even worse, and then forgot that Angel of Darkness was even bad at all because of nostalgia goggles. For new fans, I would brace yourself for this collection being a little (or possibly a lot) less good than the first one, and for it to be way less cohesive overall.
Coming out a year to the day gives me some reservation that it's aiming for a cutesy date (Feb 14 is Lara's birthday) in what might be a bit of a rush, and February is mor⛄e stacked in 2025 than it was this year, not least because Assassin's Creed Shadows recently moved in too. However, it's not all bad news. In fact, most of it is very good news - people wanted this trilogy and now they're getting it. A faster, therefore likely cheaper, development time is to be lauded (if the quality is there), and all three games still used a version of the tank controls, meaning if you're used to the first trilogy, you'll be used to this.
The Tomb Raider 4-6 Remastered collection is good news, even if a) I specifically asked not to have it and b) I'm never going to call Angel of Darkness Tomb Raider 6. I'm glad Tomb Raider games are still being made, bought, and played, even if I'd rather have something new. Next i♍n line is the Legend trilo♑gy, but since Anniversary is already a remake and those games are far more advanced, I'm not sure that's viable. Tell you what, let's all buy this new one and say we love it (even if we realise Angel of Darkness is more fun to remember than experience), and maybe some day we'll get an actual factual new Tomb Raider game.
