This penultimate expansion of Destiny’s ten-year journey should have been an immaculate prelude ဣto The Final Shape as we prepared to take on and defeat The Witness. But instead, it was a clumsily assembled mess with some cool gameplay ideas and scenery to explore that failed to cement any stakes or character motivations at all.

I diꦚdn’t interact with the seasons and build-up that followed Lightfall, so I can’t tell you whether they managed to pick up the pieces or not, but as a casual player of this looter shooter, there shouldn’t beꦑ a requirement for me to keep on top of absolutely everything to enjoy myself. To my surprise, The Final Shape seems to totally understand where I’m coming from.

The Witness Is Great Villain Because He Actually Makes Sense

Throughout Lightfall we were constantly told how much of a threat The Witness truly was, a powerful being capable of turning the power of the Traveller outward, essentially allowing it to de🌌stroy the entire universe instead of saving it. Lightfall should have been ensuring every single piece was in its place, instead of forgetting the chessboard completely and asking us to trudge through a smattering of boring missions which made little narrative sense.

It wasn’t until the final cutscene that we actually realised what was going on, and by then the whole thing was over and everyone was already angry. After dipping 🐭into every single expansion for the past decade, Destiny was closing in on the finish line with no🅰thing to make me care.

But The Final Shape changes all that. Or, at least from the handful of missions I’ve played, is well on its way. You begin by breaching the Traveller alongside Zavala and Ikora, only to find yourself sucked into a strange new dimension that both mimi♏cs the reality you know and continually bends it to an unknown will. It’s simultaneously terrifying and beautiful, a far cry from the gorgeously realised but ultimately generic neon city of Lightfall. You and your Ghost have few ways of fighting back against this new threat, going in alone as your allies are scattered to the wind.

But when all seems lost, a familiar face comes along. After biting the dust in Forsaken, our charismatic Hunter friend Cayde-6 has somehow survived, and spent years trapped inside The Traveller. He was broug🌠ht back for a reason, and right now that purpose is unclear, so we work together to find our 🔴friends and figure out precisely how to fight The Witness, who seemingly watches our every move.

He is working with fellow alien factions and summons demons of his own design to fight us, all while bending the environment and infecting parts of the Traveller with his own twisted energy. Our Ghosts can’t cope with it🐽, prone to being possessed or talking in a strange tongue which appears to echo The Witness, like they’re toying with us as if they&🎃rsquo;ve already won. He’s a compelling villain from the outset, and the fact The Final Shape is structured like the final act of an action movie really helps.

Destiny 2 Has Finally Passed The Point Of No Return

Previous expansions, and even both base games, always tackled narrative threads where you know at the end of it, thanks to Destiny’s live service design, that things must return to the status quo. We need to keep repeating missions, exploring zones, and levelling up our gear, and that isn’t really possible if the bad guys win and everything is destroyed. You will eventually tackle a mission, strike, or raid where you conquer a towering villain and protect the galaxy, while smaller nuggets of story begin to build towards a greater battle happening be꧅tween Light and Darkness.

Now we have reached that grand stage, and it’s hard to tell if anything will be left at the end of it. I mean, probably, there is an enti🧜re multi-chapter season launching with this expansion, but I’m fascinated to see what’s left after The Witness fades away. The second you leave the campaign menu, Bungie warns you that The Final Shape is crafted as a continuo♚us narrative experience, and you should see it through to the end long before doing anything else.

But the most important thing right now is that I feel excited, and all this time I didn’t expect to. It is so hard to feel invested in a story in a game which is designed to go on 🧜forever, so when a colleague of mine showed me the story traile❀r and demanded I watch it, I brushed them off.

It turns out I was wrong, and there is a central narrative and lovable characters here well wo🐓rth rooting for, even if you’re a casual player like me who only dips in for the campaign and all of the new content before calling it a day. Maybe this time I will stick aroun🦩d a bit longer.
