Over the de♔cades, Sony has released hit after hit of video game consoles. There have been periods of poor luck and poorer decisions as evidenced by the PS3, but also times of unparalleled succ💝ess with the likes of the PS2.

The PlayStation consoles are some of the most adored ever created, so adored are they that many of them have had new games released for them well past their prime. Let's look at the surprising last games on each of Sony's consoles.

6 𒅌 PlayStation 1

Jet Ace (November 15th, 2004) And Strider (October 24, 2006)

Born from the broken partnership between Sony and Nintendo, the original PlayStation launched on December 3rd, 1994 in Japan, and marked the beginning of Sony's juggernaut reputation in the console market. It took the world by storm and released 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:some of the most renowned games in the industry's history.

In terms of its final game, however, the answer is slightly complicated. The actual final game developed for the system was Jet Ace, a shoot-'em-up flight simulator. It was released in November 2004. Strider, on the other hand, was a rerelease of a previous port from 2000, though with new physical content, on October 24, 2006. That marks the final release almost 22 years after the console first launched in Japan. It's only fitting its final release was Japan-exclusive.

Pro Evolution Soccer 14 (November 8th, 2013)

First launched on March 4th, 2000, the PS2 would go on to not only be Sony's best-selling console, but the best-selling console in the world, an achievement that is only rivaled by the sales of the much more recent Nintendo Switch. With a console that popular, it's no surprise that the support for the console lasted as long as it did.

It all came to an end on November 8th, 2013 with the release of Pro Evolution Soccer 14. This version also stood out in being the only release of the game not built in Kojima Production's Fox Engine used in the game's development, making it truly unique even in comparison to other releases. PES 14 was released 13 years after the PS2 first launched, a remarkably long lifetime for a console.

4 🗹 PlayStation Portable

Retro City Rampage DX (July 19th, 2016)

Sony's first foray into the portable console market with the PSP on December 12th, 2004, a market then dominated by Nintendo, came to middling success. Though the PSP is a beloved console retrospectively, it was never quite able to compete with Nintendo's DS line of consoles. That said, it still got great support and released games when it had grown long in the tooth.

While major support for the console had dwindled by this point, one publisher decided to give the console its last hurrah in the form of Retro City Rampage DX. Released as an updated version of the base game, Retro City Rampage released on July 19th, 2016 for the PSP, ending the console's long run. After 12 years, the console had received its final game.

Brotherhood United, Killer Dolls United, Witchcrafty, Mind Maze, Ultra Mission, And Russian Subway Dogs (July 20th, 2021)

The successor to the PSP, the PS Vita was launched on December 17th, 2011, just in time for all those Christmas sales. Like its predecessor, however, the PS Vita simply couldn't crack the market dominated by Nintendo even with plenty of unique games and features of its own. Much of this was due to Sony's own lack of support for the console, but that's a separate conversation.

Despite that, the console still persevered until the releas♐e of its final set of games on July 20th, 2021. This date marked the final day to release games for the PS Vita and so it came with a slew of releases, some of them exclusive to certain regions. The most renowned of these final gam🎐es is Russian Subway Dogs, which had previously been seen on PC. After 11 years, the PS Vita was laid to rest.

Sony originally planned to shut down the PS3 and PS Vita online stores in 2021 but backed down after mass outcry. This is a ꦺlesson to always complain to major game publishers when they make bad decisions.

2 📖 PlayStation 3 🅷

Shakedown: Hawaii (August 20, 2020 Digitally, September 28th, 2022 Physically)

Despite the jokes, the PS3 would set the tone for the type of games Sony wished to make from now on, with many of those same series some of Sony's biggest on its latest console. Comparatively, the final PS3 game was nothing like what Sony would create. Shakedown Hawaii (also from the publisher of Retro City Rampage) was released on August 20th, 2020 for the PS3, making it the final game on the console. It was later followed up with a physical release on September 28th, 2022, 16 years after the PS3 first launched. Now that's a real record.

MLB: The Show (March 19th, 2024)

First launched on November 15th, 2013, the PS4 would allow Sony to pull itself back to the upper echelons of the console market, with the PS4 currently the fifth best-selling console in history. It is also still in active development despite being succeeded by the PS5, a true testament to its ongoing support. In that same vein, we can't actually say what the final game for the PS4 is because they're still making them.

With that in mind, we can frame it somewhat differently. Though third-party support is still strong, Sony itself is winding down, with no major internal release on the console since 2022. Instead, MLB: The Show 24 has been the latest release. As we have seen historically, sports games have a long lifetime on older consoles, and the same may well remain true for the PS4. Will the MLB games be the final games developed by Sony for the console, however? It's entirely possible.
