This quest acts as the conclusion to the warrior faction's overarching plot line. While it is full of important character moments and context for how The Companions came to be, it is also a test of your martial skill. The challenges ahead are not easy, and you may find yourself wishing for a guide to help you end the story.

Starting Glory Of The Dead

A man runs towards a ruins across a frozen ocean

The quest automatically activates when you return from the prior quest, Blood's Honor. Vilkas tell you that Kodlak's funeral is being held at the Skyforge and that you should go there immediately. You will find a crowd of mourners at the forge comprising the many people that had known Kodlak. After a solemn ceremony, Eorlund Gray-Mane will pull you aside to ask for the Fragments of Wuuthrad and to go to Kodlak's room in Jorrvaskr to retrieve a fragment that the Harbinger had kept separately.

You can find Kodlak's journal in the same drawer the Fragment is kept in. While reading it is optional,♚ it adds context to the entire questline.

When you provide him with the final fragment, he will tell you that the Circle had gone to the Underforge to discuss the next steps. They will be in the hidden chamber beneath the Skyforge where you became a Werewolf. The Circle laments their failure to cure Kodlak of his lycanthropy before Eorlund returns with the reforged Wuuthrad. Its return allows the Circle to set a plan in motion and they set off for Ysgramor's Tomb, north-west of Winterhold.

You don't need to follow them to the tomb. If there are no fast travel options available, take a carriage to Winterhold. Follow the road behind the Jarl's longhouse and head north to reach the tomb.

Clearing Ysgramor's Tomb

Two men attack a ghost

This tomb is the final resting place of the first human ruler in Tamriel and has the grandeur to match. While the Circle has come in force, Vilkas tells you that he won't be continuing on. As he also tells you, to enter the tomb itself, you need to interact with the statue of Ysgramor and place Wuuthrad in its hands. A door behind the statue will open, allowing you to pass through.

You can take Wuuthrad back after the door opens, should you wish to use it. While it is a powerful two-handed axe, its innate bonus damage to elves will not be useful in this dungeon. There are no penalties for fighting your usual way.

You will have to fight the pests infesting Ysgramor's Tomb and the ghosts of the original 500 Companions. The ghosts themselves will fight you head-on with few tricks. 🌄They appear in large numbers and as a mixture of archers and melee fighters.

Remember that Aela and Farkas are still with you and let the two Companions take on some of the pressure.

Farkas will stop you at a webbed-up door after several rooms. Explaining that he has developed a fear of spiders after Dustman's Cairn, he leaves to join his twin at the entrance. With just Aela left, you will need to fight through several groups of Frostbite Spiders.

The Ghosts will return as enemies shortly after. Once you reach a room with a locked-off door, pause and make sure that you are prepared. The next room will be especially difficult with a pair of ghostly archers protected by another pair of warriors. Th🐼is is the final test before you reach the end.

Freeing Kodlak's Spirit

A man talks to a ghost in front of a blue flame

Kodlak will be waiting for you in the final room. After exchanging a few words, he tells you to free him of his lycanthropy by throwing the head of a Glenmoril Witch into the blue fire in front of him.

His bestial spirit will separate from him and attack, forcing you to put it down. It is, in essence, a buffed-up wolf. The red spirit will attack you with devastating bites and lunge attacks that can quickly deplete your health. Fortunately, it will go ♛down quickly, assuming you surv♛ive the attacks.

The ghostly spirit can be hard to track in the dark room. If you are struggling, setting it on fire or otherwise applying a visual effect will make it easier to find.

You will speak a final time with Kodlak. He will name you the Harbinger of The Companions before fading away, leaving you and Aela alone in the room. After speaking to her, the quest ends though you will still be able to talk to other Companions about what has transpired.

If you have an extra Glenmoril Witch Head, you can cure yourself of ❀lycanಞthropy before you leave.

After finishing this quest, you will be able to make Companions your followers and craft ancient Nord and Nord Hero equipment at the Skyforge.

The Shield of Ysgramor
