Enemies will soon become friends as you team up with new allies to save the land. Bish, bash, bosh.

What makes it so brilliant is how I’d conditioned myself to expect the exact opposite. Most RPGs I’ve played from Japan are epics that span 30 or more hours with melodrama and mechanics that refuse to hold your hand. Well, unless you’re Pokemon, I suppose. But in games like Final Fantasy, Persona, Chrono Trigger, or Legend of Dragoon, you come in expecting to dedicate a significant chunk of your tꦐime to the journey. And you’ll enjoy it.

Super Mario RPG pulls you into a false sense of security with its opening cutscenes and gradual introduction of certain mechanics, offering up new ideas and characters and before you know it, you’re halfway through the entire thing. I was shocked at how fast it went, whether I was darting across the world map making new friends or conquering bosses. The writing wastes no t🐠ime getting where it needs to go, meaning there is never a dull moment or an instance where you aren’t constantly being surprised by funny jokes or clever design. It’s in the game’s nature to subvert what it means to be both an RPG and a Mario gameꦗ, and as someone who never played the original but did dabble in Paper Mario, this feels like a return to where it all began.

Seeing returning fans celebrate intact quirks and dialogue while also discovering additions or refinements warms my heart as I stumble across them for the first time, finally understanding all the critical praise Super Mario RPG has received in the decades since its release. I admire it for how confident it is to jump into a genre with so many established conventions, only to ignore as many of them as it embraces. Yes, it has turn-based battles and characters to level up and customise, but it also has obscured platforming sections and playfully designed levels, while tellin🌱g a story that is unlike anything Mario has ever done before. While he isn’t one to talk, Mario has more personality here than he ever has before, while Bowser quickly becomes a hesitant ally alongside the Princess he loves to kidnap.

Everything about this game is lined with timeless charm, and Mario and friends never outstay their welcome. It could have been ten hours longer, and I would🃏 have eaten it up, but to show this much restraint and still be bursting with creativity is a stunning achievement.
