, Sucker Punch, via communications manager Andrew Goldfarb, explained in great🉐 detail why Sakai was being left behind in the latest game from the first-party studio.

The Ghost Is An Idea That Will Live On

First and foremost, the new protagonist is named Atsu. Her journey takes place more than 🧸300 years after the events of the original game, meaning Sakai and his band of friends have long since passed away. , Sucker Punch is married to the idea of the titular "Ghost," and sought to create a new experience with that motif.

To create something fresh but familiar, we looked beyond Jin Sakai’s story 🌠and the island of Tsushima, and shifted our focus to the idea of the Ghost instead. At Sucker Punch we love origin stories, and we wanted to explore what it could mean to have a new hero wearing a Ghost mꦿask, and uncovering a new legend.

In other words, while Sakai won't be in the game, the fr🐼anchise's central theme of a "Ghost" will live on. That might be a bummer to some who were hoping to continue his story, though it does al⛦low Sucker Punch to tell various stories from all over Japan featuring a new Ghost.

Indeed, Sucker Punch believes that one of the core pillars that was established by the original Tsushima is a wandering samurai in Feudal Japan. That, plus the freedom to explore the world at your own pace, along with particular attention to the beauty of Japan are what makes the franchise a success. Atsu's journey will touch all of those pillars in the same way that Jin's did.As for the game itself, Sucker Punch confirms it's the studio's first title being built from the ground up for the PS5. The teꦍam referenced "massive sightlines," as well as "even more believable movement from wind on grass and vegetation" in the blog on top of new gameplay mechanics. It's a fascinating approach on the part of Sucker Punch, and in a world rife with sequels, it'll be nice to experience similar mechanics within a new self-contained journey. Given how amazing Sucker Punch's previous protagonists have been (Sly, Cole, Jin Sakai), there's no doubt that Atsu will be just as impressive. 2025 truly can't come soon enough.
