Summary

  • Surviving falls and dealing with odd mechanics can take away from the immersive horror experience.
  • Finding irrelevant items in enemy-free zones creates false sense of danger and uncertainty for players.
  • Unrealistic narrative setups, like an unqualified protagonist getting hired, can strain believability in the game's story.

168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Still Wakes the Deep is probably one of the best first-person survival horror games in a while and one of the finest 🍌interpretations of H.P. Lovecraft. However, that chilling isolated oil rig atmosphere and immersive gameplay can quickly be overshadowed by some things that just don't quite work in terms of story and mechanics.

In your initial playthrough, some of these moments may pass you by, as you'll be overwhelmed by disturbing creatures and the sheer terror of water. But, after some deeper analysis, you may find yourself agreeing with some of the points highlighted below.

11 💝 Caz Surviving His Fall At The Beginnꦫing And Getting Right Back Up On His Feet

The Opening Was A Bit Naive

Still Wakes The Deep Caz Asking Brodie If There's Anything He Can Do To Help With Raffs' Diving Bell

When the horror gets set into motion at the beginning of Still Wakes the Deep, there's one moment that you just can't find believable. Caz is on the platform about to leave on a helicopter, and then there's suddenly a seismic shake on the rig, and one of Caz's friends, Gregor, is about to fall off the edge. You're unable to save him, and he plummets to his death.

Right after that, the same thing happens to your character. Caz falls right off from the same height, with even an oil drum about to hit his face as he falls, yet he survives and is back on the deck in no time, helping Brodie with a diving bell, like his ordeal was nothing major. There's barely any recovery time for Caz, and there appear to be no sustained injuries.

10 Having To Randomly Use Heaters To Warm Up, But Only Back In Accommodation ဣ

Wouldn't You Already Die Of Hypothermia Getting To One?

Still Wakes The Deep Caz Holding His Hands Out And Warming Them Up In Front Of A Heater

One of the oddest mechanics that feels a bit random and unnecessary in Still Wakes the Deep is the heater. You don't have to use one every time you're returning from another section of the rig, but there are random points where you'll be asked to warm yourself up before you can proceed to the next objective. It's literally just an animation of Caz rubbing his hands together in front of it.

The strange part is that the heaters are only available in Accommodation and aren't scattered around the map. So, when you've just had a long section of going through free⛄zing water and walking in a cold environment, you won't freeze before reaching one? You could also probably stand in the freezer for a long time after speaking with Roy and not even need one, either.

9 ও Having Lockers And Distraction Items In Areas W𝄹ith No Enemies

Causing More Uncertainty For The Players

This game plays more with unease and a lot of different fears, like thalassophobia, claustrophobia, and the Lovecraftian fear of the unknown, rather than pure jumpscares. What makes things more uneasy is when you walk into a room where there a✨re lockers to h✱ide in and objects to throw, but they turn o♑ut to not be of much use for that area.

There are multiple instances of this, where the enemy room is completely isolated from the area you're currently in, yet there are hard hats and bottles to pick up and toss. You'll have to drop the items anyway since there's bound to be a ladder or ledge to climb up or a wheel handle to turn, and it creates a false sense of danger.

8 Rennick Not Wanting Caz To Die And Cautioning Him, Yet Still Leaving Without Him On The Helicopter ✅

Antagonist Rennick Gets A Moment's Redemption

Still Wakes The Deep Rennick's Helicopter Flying Away From The Rig As Caz Shouts For Them To Wait

After all the lifeboats are gone, you get a phone call from your boss, Rennick, who is not the nicest guy, to say the least. Up to this point, he's been very rude and antagonistic toward Caz, but he briefly turns a new leaf in their conversation before rendering that whole thing moot.

He claims he doesn't want Caz's death on his conscience, no matter how much he hates him, and even gives him a friendly tip not to interact with any of that mysterious stuff overtaking the oil rig. When it comes to the evacuation, however, Caz is right there in front of the helicopter, and Rennick abandons him on the platform anyway, leaving Caz to die.

7 🏅 Having🦩 To Unscrew Only The Top Two Screws From The Vents

Pulling Off Vents Would Require Super Strength

Still Wakes The Deep Caz Unscrewing A Vent Cover With A Screwdriver

The vents also turned out to be a little funny and nonsensical if the developers wanted to go there. Caz carries a screwdriver with him, and he'll unscrew only the two screws from the top of the grate covering the vent, completely ignoring the bottom ones. This causes the vent to have a slight gap, so Caz takes his screwdriver and pulls away at the gap to pop off the cover.

If you're already unscrewing the top two screws, wouldn't you just want to adjust the animation to have Caz also unscrew the bottom two to make it fully realistic? Otherwise, it feels like Caz must have super strength to pull a metal grate off a wall that's still screwed in. And how does the screwdriver not break?

6 🌞How Brodie Managed To 🐼Come Out Alive And Unscathed After Securing Raffs From The Diving Bell

Raffs Was One Of The First To Become One Of The Creatures

Still Wakes The Deep Raffs' Diving Bell With The Mysterious Infection Growth And Tendrils Protruding Out From The Door

After Caz's fall, you go straight into another moment that doesn't make any sense. Brodie is trying to free their other coworker, Raffs, from the diving bell, who's inside and screaming in pain. You're led to believe he was one of the first to see this otherworldly growth from the bottom of the sea, and later on, seeing the condition of the diving bell, you find out Raffs did turn into one of the creatures.

Brodie says he'll help Raffs out of the diving bell, but you later see him alive and well, as though nothing happened, and Brodie remains with you for the rest of the game. If he was present and dealing with Raffs while he was turning, shouldn't Brodie have been one of the first crewmates to go?

5 How A Trade🐓 Electrician Gets Hired For A Giant Oil Rig Operatioꦛn In The North Sea From The Good Word Of A Cook

The Narrative Setup Is A Tad Unbelievable

Still Wakes The Deep A Flashback Of Suze Arguing With Caz And Stating That Roy Is A Cook, Not A Chef, With Weird Screen Effects

How Caz ended up on the Beira D oil rig, to begin with, is pretty farfetched. He was pretty much a standard electric🍨ian who did small jobs, according to his wife Suze, and didn't sound like he was a very skilled guy in the field. But, he is accepted to the position of being one of the primary electricians on such a serious and large-scale operation as an oil rig in the North Sea.

And the kicker? While already unqualified to be trusted with such duties, his friend Roy, who's a mere cook, ultimately threw in a good word that miraculously got Caz hired. It all sounds like highly implausible circumstances for hiring, and, to top it off, Caz is also being sought by the police for an assault on the mainland as well.

4 Beira D's Phones Still Working When "All Lines Of Communication Have Been Severed"

Not All Communication Is Severed, As The Game Would Have You Believe

Still Wakes The Deep Caz Facing The Phone As He Speaks To Brodie

If you read the description on the game page, it says, "All lines of communication have been severed. All exits are gone. All that remains is to face the unknowable horror that’s come aboard." That's partly true. While you are cut off from the outside world, there's still plenty of communication going on at the Beira D oil rig.

If you want the Finlay Destination achievement, there are a variety of ways to meet your untimely end in Still Wa♎kes the Deep.

At almost every point, you'll be receiving phone calls from multiple characters and keeping in constant communication with them, as this is 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:one of the game's main storytelling devices. It also seems like the Lovecraftian terror growing on the rig hasn't affected any of the telephone lines either.

3 The Monkey Bars Around The ꦏBeira D 𓆉

Are We On An Oil Rig Or Playing Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay?

Still Wakes The Deep Caz On The Beira D Monkey Bars With A Prompt To Climb

There's lots of traversal on the oil rig, whether you're crouching and crawling through shipping containers and vents, carefully scaling ledges and ascending and descending ladders, using elevators, swimming, and climbing along pipes. One of the more unconventional and o💝utdated traversal methods that also have no business being on an actu💃al oil rig is the monkey bars.

There are a couple of instances where Caz will have to hold and climb yellow industrial monkey bars like Riddick from 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:the video game Escape from Bu𝔍tcher Bay to get across platforms. It doesn't make sense to go for a realistic atmosphere and design of an offshore oil rig and then add some elements that don't really belong there.

2 ꦰ Roy Needing Insulin When He Has Low Bl♍ood Sugar

He Should've Just Taken The Jam McLeary Offered

Still Wakes The Deep Roy And Caz Having A Foul-Mouthed Conversation About Spock

Normally, when you decide you want to have a medical condition as a significant part of your game's plot, it would be best to do some due diligence and make sure your information is accurate. It seems like The Chinese Room took a misstep with the handling of Roy's diabetes in the game.

Throughout Caz's conversation with Roy, you can tell he's not well and has all the symptoms of hypoglycemia or low blood sugar. However, Roy brushes off Caz's advice to have some sugary jam and is persistent about needing his insulin. The only issue is that insulin lowers blood sugar and is only needed when you have hyperglycemia, so Roy, indeed, should've just listened to Caz.
