Design And Build
The Ally and Deck take distinctly different design approaches. Asus has crafted the Ally with a minimalist, futuristic aesthetic in mind. Slim bezels surround the seven-inch 16:9 screen, and the angular silhouette is punctuated by cyberpunk styling and the unmistakable ROG logo. Despite weighing just 608 grams, the Ally feels solidly built. The polymer rear plate features a unique triangular pattern for extra grip. Small touches like the fingerprint reader being seamlessly integrated into the power button are a definite plu♏s point as well.
On the other hand, the Steam Deck ༺goes for a more utilitarian look optimized for long, comfortable handheld gaming sessions. Its thicker bezels accommodate side grips that your thumbs can rest on. At 669 grams the Deck has a bit more heft, but it still feels remarkably light for th♑e hardware inside.
The Deck's layout focuses on ergonomics. All controls and inputs are perfectly positioned, so your hands don't have to strain even after hours of play. And Valve offers some personal customization, you can swap out the front and rear plates for different color options to match you🌺r style.
Display
The Ally packs a touch-supported seven-inch FHD+ panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. Having a high refresh rat𝐆e translates into smoother animations and enhanced gameplay response. The Steam Deck's display measures an identical seven-inches corner to corner display that has a 1280 x 800 resolution🥃 whose refresh maxes out at 60Hz. However, it does use a 16:10 aspect ratio which is undoubtedly more suitable for gaming.
In terms of quality, both screens use IPS technology for wide viewing angles and color accuracy. The Ally's panel gets significantly brighter at 500 nits of peak brightness compared to just 400 nits on the Steam Deck. And yes, the Steam Deck screen is also a touchscreen. We'd give a slight edge here to the A♒lly since the 120Hz refresh makes a noticeable difference in motion clarity, and the extra brightness provides more headroom when gaming outside.
Performance And Gaming Benchmarks
This is where things get really interesting. The ROG Ally packs the cutting-edge AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor. Built on an optimized 4nm process, it combines Zen 4 CPU cores and next-gen RDNA 3 graphics. It absolutely blazes through benchmarks. The processor recorded over 140 fps in GFXBench's ꦺManhattan test. For context, the Steam Deck scores arou🐲nd 45 fps on this benchmark.
The Steam Deck isn't slow by any means though. It uses a semi-custom APU co-develope💝d with AMD, combining Zen 2 processing power with RDNA 2 graphics. But there's a clear performance delta, with the Ally posting well over 2x higher frame rates in some tests. Basically, this advantage translates directly into games. You could very easily run modern titles like Cyberpunk 2077 at max settings at 40+ fps.
Now the Steam Deck is still very much capable of running all the latest games🌄, just at lower settings in some cases. Valve has also done extensive optimization on the SteamOS side to maximize performance. But if you want the very highest frame rates on the go, the ROG Ally is the clear winner here.
Controls
Portable gaming relies heavily on intuitive and responsivꦦe controls. Both Asus and Valve have done an excellent job creating versatile, gamer-friendly input schemes. The stan💖dard buttons and dual analog sticks you would expect are present on both devices. The clickable joysticks provide excellent tactile feedback.
Ergonomics are also excellent across the board. Long play sessions are comfortable thanks to the smartly sculpted grips and balanced weight distribution. At the same time, textured rear surfaces help keep things anchor🦄ed in your hands. Either device can easily be used for three-hour gaming maratho✱ns without any issue.
Now, the Steam Deck does add its signature dual trackpads into the mix. The plus point here is that they work exactly like the trackpads on the Steam Controller. With haptic feedback enabled, they feel superb to use and add new play styles🐟, especially for strategy games.
The Ally skips the trackpads but integrates two rear paddle buttons for key bindings. Both units support motion controls andꦡ gyro aiming as well. When it comes to controls, both Asus and Valve hit it out of the park - you really can't go wrong here.

168澳洲幸运5开奖网: Best Retro Handheld ༺Consoles💞 In 2024
It'💃s 🥀a great time to get into retro handhelds and we've found some of the best devices available.
Gaming Ecosystem
A major consideration when it comes to a handheld is the type of gaming platforms you get to access. And this is where some key differences emerge. The ROG Ally runs Windows 11, giving it access to the complete Xbox and PꦛC gaming ecosystems. Not only can you can install the Xbox Game Pass for access to hundreds of games, you can als📖o enable Cloud Sync and cross-play with Xbox consoles.
Of course, you also get full access to all your favorite PC game launchers and storef😼ronts like Steam, Epic Games Store, Origin, Ubisoft Connect, and so on. Any game you own on PC can be installed on the Ally.
Conversely, the Steam Deck uses a Linux-based OS called SteamOS. This gives you direct compatibility with your Steam library, just log in and all your games are ready to download. But it does have some limitations, considerin𓆏g that most other PC game stores don't run natively in SteamOS.
Naturally, ♔Valve wouldn't just sit there and do nothing, and so has come up with an ingenious solution called Proton. This compatibility layer translates Windows games to run remarkably well on Linux. However, we gotta 🏅say that the ROG Ally takes the cake with this one, considering the native Windows support.
Battery Life
Both the ROG Ally ෴and Steam Deck are equipped with 40Wh batteries. That's roughly 10Wh more capacity than the Nintendo Switch OLED model to give you some perspective. The built-in battery optimization software does a great job stretching out runtime by intelligently reducing performance and frame rates when unplugged.
Steam claims between two and eight hours of playtime for the Deck depending on game and settings, and both the handhelds charge quickly thanks to USB-PD support. However, the Ally has an edge here, as its more efficient inte🌟rnals enable slightly longer runtimes while away from a charger. Then again, that's on a very minute scale, and if we're talking round-figure🙈s, either device offers a respectable battery life that should get you through most gaming sessions without an issue.
Storage And Memory
The ROG Ally comes equipped with 16GB of cutting-edge LPDDR5 RAM clocked at an incredible 6400MHz. That's some seriously fast memory well suited for mobile g🍰aming and multitasking. Storage is covered by a speedy PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD. The base 512GB capacity should be enough for any gamer's library, but the drive is user upgradable to 1TB i💮f you need more space.
The Steam Deck isn't quite as bleeding edge spec-wise, but still highly capable. It also packs 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM, though only ℱclocked at 5500MHz modules. Internal storage options range from 64GB eMMC, to 256GB, or 512GB PCIe NVMe SSDs. The SSDs are limited to PCIe Gen 3, as compared to the💙 PCIe 4.0 in the Ally, but we didn't notice huge differences in game load times.
Both devices also feature microSD card slots for external storage expansion. The Ally wins out here overall than🌠ks to its super speedy DDR5 me🤪mory and PCIe 4.0 SSD.

Software
Software experience can make or break a gaming device. Thankfully, both Asus and Valve have crafted streamlined interfaces perfect for handheld play. The ROG Ally runs Windows 11 out of the box. The full capabilities of Windows are at your fingertips, perfect for content creation and productivity on the go. Windows 11 also introduces Auto HDR for♛ enhanced visuals in supported games.
Asus includes Armoury Crate SE, a specialized app for managing your game library. It automatically scans your system and pulls in games from all sources into one unified interface. You get handy tools like the ability to monitor system stats a꧋nd FPS while gaming.
Since it runs SteamOS, the gaming experience on the Steam Deck is more console-like.🐎 The Steam library is front and center. Valve has optimized the Steam client for handheld play with larger text and controls. The SteamOS 3.0 is more stable and game compatible as well, all thanks to Proton.
You could say that the Deck's dedicated gaming interface gives it an edge over juggling multiple launchers on Windows. The quick suspend/resume functionality, for example, allows you to instantly jump in and out of any game without it being too much of a hassle. However, for🤡 those who want a truly open ecosystem, the Ally wouܫld be a wise choice.
Cooling And Thermals
The Steam Deck uses a very clever air cooling system. Air is quickly drawn in from the sides through the fins of a sizable heatsink before being expelled out the top. There's minimal throttling even after hours of gaming thanks to the bee𝔍fy vapor chamber cooler.
Asus equipped the ROG Ally with a similar heatsin🥀k and fan cooling array they call "Zero Gravity". By orienting the heat pipes vertically, the system can maintain effective cooling whether held♔ horizontally or vertically. Intelligent power limits also prevent excessive thermal ramp up when gaming unplugged.
Both devices do an admirable job dispelling heat given their c♋ompact size. CPU and GPU speeds 🔯stay stable over extended play sessions resulting in consistent performance.

Verdict
Asus and Valve have delivered two remarkably capable handhelds that redefine🃏 mobile gaming. The ROG Ally pushes performance to the bleeding edge thanks to its Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip. Triple digit frame rates and max settings in the latest AAA games impress. Meanwhile, the Steam Deck brings desktop-class PC gaming to an af🎐fordable and portable form factor. Its controls and industrial design set new standards for handheld ergonomics.
Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of performance can I expect when connecting to external displays?
Thanks to the powerful AMD internals, both the ROG Ally and Steam Deck allow gaming at up to 4K 120fps when docked to an external display over USB-C. The Ally can even handle displays up to 8K resolution at 60Hz. Precision controls like gyro aiming also tr𒉰anslate well to the big screen. One advantage of the Steam Deck is the ability to seamlessly switch between handheld and docked mode, your game state is preserved.
Do these handhelds support game modding and customization?
Mod support is one area where the Steam Deck excels thanks to Steam Workshop integration and full access to Proton layers. Mods can be downloaded and applied to🌄 games with just a few clicks. Windows 11 on the ROG Ally also allows modding of supported titles, but lacks the seamless Steam integration. However, the Ally🍨 gives you more options for advanced game customization via Windows tools like Hex editors. For quick mod downloads though, the Steam Deck is king.
Can I use emulators and access my game ROM library on these devices?
Yes, with full Windows 11 access, setting up emulators like RetroArch on the ROG Ally i♋s pretty straightforward. An added advantage for Steam Deck users is that they can also add emulators via the Discover store or Desktop Mode, although these emulators may be slightly trickier to run in SteamOS.
ROM libraries and ISO files are acce𒅌ssible on both, although the Ally makes organizing these collections easier. All things considered, when it comes to the widest compatibility with emulators and game vaults, the༺ Ally is likely the better choice.
