Summary
- Yee-haw! We got ourselves a cowboy game!
- I mean, sure. It's in space. But it feels like a cowboy game, right?
- Han Solo is the most a character has ever been a cowboy without actually being a cowboy.
The cowboy genre seems the perfect fit for video games, and yet there are way too few of them in the world. The sharpshooting, the moral code, the drifting from town to town in search of adventure… all of these are strong foundations for what could be a brilliant video game. Right now, I’m hoping 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Star Wars Outlaws can fill that void.
It feels like developers have been scared off from the Wild West by 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Red Dead Redemption. Rockstar’s series is excellent (I’d have RDR2 in 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:my top five of all time) and has a higher budget than most games could dream of, but we don’t see this in other ge🌠nres, where other developers instead seem to try to emulate and piggyback on genre successes.
Fantasy games are frequent, despite few games being able to measure up to Skyrim, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:The Witcher, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Elden Ring, or 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Baldur’s Gate 3. When 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Mass Effect was on to🍌p of the world, we saw more space games, not fewer🐭. But Red Dead feels like a lone ranger.
Even the Tonto has run off, with classic cowie title Call of Juarez updating to the modern day with The Cartel in 2011. It did head back to its home on the r𝄹ange for The Gunslinger in 2013, which both sold and reviewed well, but in the decade since we’ve heard nothing. A few recent indie games have taken to the frontier, like Weird West or Evil West, but we haven’t had anything meaty to sink our teeth into for a while now.
Star Wars Owes A Lot To Cowboy Stories
Star Wars Outlaws might not be the obvious answer to these hopes. ‘It’s set in outer space’ would be the first issue you might find with it, as opposed to it being set in the US in the mid- to late-19th century. But while not a true cowboy game thanks to this very large caveat, Outlaws can still feel like a cowboy game.
168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Star Wars is often described as a space west🐓ern (and just as often confused with being a space opera, which it is not), because George Lucas originally too🌃k inspiration from cowboy and samurai stories and transplanted them into space. From the way Han Solo dresses to his blaster to his rugged, stoic, good-hearted scoundrel nature, everything about him is a cowboy.
The lightsabers and Jedi code are taken from samurai, and Luke’s arc is a classic Hero’s Journey, but there are cowboys all over Star Wars, and there always have been. It’s these fingerprints that can be seen most obviously on what we&rsqu🦹o;ve seen of Star Wars Outlaws so far.
When I first saw Kay Vess, I instantly thought of Han Solo. Of course, everyone else seemed to have other thoughts brought about by a ꦬgrass touchꦺing deficiency, so there hasn’t been much talk about the game itself. In this regard, Ubisoft 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:paywalling a Jabba the Hutt mission has 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:similarly distra🐎cted the conversation away from the substance of the game itself. But it’s clear ꦺfrom the trailer things are🅠 a little bit rootin’ tootin’.
Star Wars Outlaws Is Cowboys And Aliens
We see Vess venture to deserts in the sunset and put together a ragtag crew (possibly a magnificent seven) in order to survive against the long arm of the law. She has a Solo-esque blaster and seems to be trying to defy a criminal gang she crossed once down the line with nothing more than a crack shot and good old fashioned gumption. There’s a lot of your typical Star Wars sp🍷aceship stealing, droid fighting action too, but there’s a definite hint of the Wild West on the breeze.
Even the name ‘Outlaws’ feels a lot more in line with the Wild West side of Star Wars. It tells us we’ll be focussed on smaller parts of the Star Wars universe, of ne’er-do-wells staying alive against all odds, of characters who do bad things but remain good people. Compared to something like 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Jedi: Fallen Order, it’s ob൩viously leaning away from the canon-shifting political ramifications to tell more of an action-packed adventure qu♛est. It’s a dog-eared dime store novel of a game. Vess is a run and gunner surviving by the smoke of her pistol, and I’m expecting a lot of cowboy inspirations in the full experience.
Ultimately, Outlaws may scratch the itch for a cowboy game, ꦑbut I’d still love a return to the real Wild West. Developers, I promise not to say it’s not as good 𝔉as Red Dead Redemption 2. Even if it’s not, I won’t say it. Please, just make it for me. Please. Until then, I’m content with Star Wars.
