Next, 'Everybody Have Fun Tonight' by Wang Chung plays for a couple shots. Then, there’s an old country song. Something quietly plays in the background as Jason talks to the prison employee. And, the second half of the trailer is all soundtracked by "Hot Together" by The Pointer Sisters. That mixture of tracks gives the trailer a slice-of-life feel, like we’re getting time-lapse footage of Jason’s day.
At least, until he picks up Lucia, at which point the trailer kicks into a more𒐪 heightened gear.
Those songs don't all play at the same level. That first song and the song in the prison play quietly, almost imperceptibly, in the background. The Spanish song plays first on Jason's truck radio, then when Jason robs the convenience store, it's piping in through the speakers. ‘Everybody Have Fun Tonight’ continues playing (presumably from a Bluetooth speaker or, if Jason is old school, a boom𒐪box) when he’s working the bench press on the beach.
Audio Quality And Quantity
The second trailer emphasizes other differences in audio quality, too. When Jason is talking to the guard at the prison, Jason’s voice sounds normal, but the guard, speaking from behind glass, has his voice slightly garbled and tinny as it pipes through. An Ammu-Nation commercial, similarly, sounds like it’s a little louder than Lucia and Jason’s TV speakers can handle. The trailer is a showcase for diegetic sound, showing that radios, TVs, car speakers🔴, convenience store sound systems, and more will come together to form the soundscape of Vice City.
These aren’t the sexy elements of sound design, though the trailer does give us some of those, too. We hear planes whoosh by as Jason drives along the street, a safe scraping along the road as it’s pulled by a truck, gunfire, the ocean laღpping the shore, a cash register dinging as he robs th𓆉e till, and more. For an action-adventure game like this, those action-y elements are key to the experience.
And that’s assuming you’re e♔ven paying attention to the audio. The graphics are the obvious star of the show here, and t✱he game’s impressive, textured lighting is a big reason it feels so much ‘realer’ than previous triple-A games. But the audio is a huge factor, too, providing a similar level of texture. Localizing the music in the trailer to the specific speakers it would be playing out of in-world makes it feel like you’re there with the characters, like Vice City is all around you, not just on your TV screen.
