As it turns out, there may not actually be any “impossible” seeds in the game at all, at least to a few billion tests done by Forgotten Arbiter, a popular modder in the game’s community.
The revelation comes as a secondary effect of unrelated research. In his recent blog post, “Is Every Game of Slay The Spire Winnable?” Forgotten Arbiter describes how he uses the term seed to r𝓰efer to games with randomness in which a sequence of letters of numbers determines the randomness of a playthrough.
Forgotten Arbiter then lays out exactly what randomness means within this game, including elements such as map layout, the order or normal or elite fights, the bonuses offered at the start of each run by Neow, the contents of unknown rooms, and enemy AI for certain encounters. From there, card rewa🃏rds, potion drops, order of events, outcomes o꧃f events, and shop contents need to also be considered.
To find what can be termed an “impossible” seed, thereℱ must first be a set of circumstances constructed that would result in that. Lucki🐬ly, Forgotten Arbiter already had a tool that would do this created for something entirely different.
According to his parameters, only one in 50 million seeds returned from his search as potentially impossible to complete. However, after posting the seed to the Slay the Spire Discord channel, it was soundly de♕😼feated in June, 2020.
In total, there are roughly 18.4 quintillion seed combinations for the game. Based on Forgotten Arbiters probability estimate, there is a high change that a unwinnable seed exists, but it is too rare to practically locate, and will likely never be experienced any of the entire Slay the Spire ﷺcommunity. Of course, the analysis could change if parameters in the game were to change, such as if new classes, cards, bosses, or other elemenಌts were to be introduced or adjusted for balance.
The good news then is that virtually no seeds of Slay the Spire should ever be considered hopeless. The bad news, unfortunately, if that every loss can𓂃 only be attributed to a lack of player skill. Oh well, there is always room to improve!
