Accepting The Bleak Falls Barrow Quest
To accept this quest, speak with Balgruuf the Greater, who is the current Jarl of Whiterun; you can find him within Dragonsreach. Upon speaking with the Jarl, he will tell you to meet with Farengar Secret-Fire, the court wizard.
This quest is very closely related to The Golden Claw quest, which requires you to visit Bleak Falls Barrow as well. You can complete these quests at the same time. If you h༒ave already finished the Golden Claw, you may have the item needed for the Bleak Falls Barrow q🎃uest. In this case, you will just need to talk with Farengar again.
As you speak with Farengar, he will tell you about the Dragonstone, which can be found in an ancient Nordic tomb. He will not provide any additional inform🅷ation, so you will need to venture here yourself.
Traveling To Bleak Falls Barrow
After speaking with Farengar, head to Bleak Falls Barrow, located to the west of Riverwood.
If you have yet to accept The Golden Claw, you can speak with the owner of the Riverwood Trader. S🌼peak with him about a stolen item, and then the quest will begin.
The path to Bleak Falls Barrow is pretty simple; head to the mountains from Riverwood while following the marker on your compass bar. Outside of Bleak 🎉Falls Barrow🐻, you will encounter several bandits; defeat them, and then head to the entrance of the tomb.
Inside The Tomb
Entering the tomb will place you in a large chamber containing additional bandits. At this point, if you have yet to accept The Golden Claw, you will receive it after listening to the bandits' conversation.
Defeat or sneak by these bandits, and then continue through the tunnels until you come to a puzzle room with an additional bandit. You will see the bandit trigger a trap by pulling a handle, which shoots darts and kills him. Avoid this trap by solving the puzzle that this room presents. You will need to do this by setting the pillars to the correct symbol. From le♓ft to right, the pillars should display the following symbols.
- Snake
- Snake
- Whale
With the pillars set, pull the lever and the door will open. Go through the door and proceed until you find yourself at a spiral staircase leading downwards.
Saving Arvel The Swift
At the bottom of the stairs, you will notice spiderwebs, indicating that the next room will contain a spider. While entering this room, you will also hear the voice of someone in need; kill the spider and then speak with Arvel the Swift, who is stuck in a spiderweb.
Upon speaking to him, he will tell you about the Golden Claw, and promise to help you. Unsurprisingly, Arvel betrays you once you cut him from the webs. You can choose to kill him or let him run; regardless of what you pick, Arvel will die. If you kill Arvel, be sure to loot his body to obtain the Golden Claw.
After dealing with Arvel, enter the following rooms which contain several Draugr that need to be defeated. While proceedin𒁃g thrꦫough this section of the tomb, be wary of any pressure plates. Stepping on these plates will trigger spiked walls to swing.
If you did not kill Arvel, he can be found either near a Draugr or at a spiked wall. Loot his body and retrieve the Golden Claw.
With the claw in hand, continue through the tomb while avoiding any obstacle in your way. The traps within this area will not be too difficult, since this is the game's first dungeon.
Using The Golden Claw
Eventually, you will come to a room with a small water stream running through it. Pull the chain to open the gate at the end of this room, until you are met with a Nordic puzzle door.
At this door, you will need to set the rings to the correct symbol, and then use the Golden Claw as a key. The symbols can be seen on the claw from your inventory. Below, you can ꦜcheck out the correct order o൩f symbols from top to bottom.
- Bear
- Moth
- Owl
Once the symbols are correct, place the claw and open the door.
Obtaining The Dragonstone
On the other side of the door, you will find the first Dragon Shout; Unrelenting Force. This shout will push away those that stand in your way. After learning the shout, a Draugr will rise from a sarcophagus. Kill them and then loot the Dragonstone off his body.
Returning To Farengar
With the Dragonstone in hand, it's time to return to Whiterun and speak with Farengar. This will end the questꦡ, and immediatelꦍy begin the following main story quest, titled Dragon Rising.
Prior to returning to Farengar, you can stop by Riverwood and complete the Golden Claw quest.
Rewards
As a reward for finishing Bleak Falls Barrow, you will be rewarded with enchanted armor depending on your current level, as well as permission to buy Breezehome; a house available in Whiterun.
