My favorite thing about is that it doesn’t have a spoiler season. Both Genetic Apex and Mythical Island launched without a single card preview or hint about what was to come. One day all the cards were just there, and we got to discover what they were by opening packs ourselves. I’m used to seeiꦿng a trickle of new cards over weeks leading up to the release of a fresh TCG set, so this has been an exciting change of pace.

Pokemon TCG Pocket Players Are Already Countering Spac🅺e-Time♛ Smackdown Meta
Palkia, Honchkrow, and Lucario have been singled out as potenti🧜al threats.
My least favorite thing about Pokemon TCG Pocket is that it doesn’t have a spoiler season. We’re less than a week away from the launch of the next set and we don’t know a single thing about it. The goblin in my brain that survives exclusively on hype is starving right now. I just want a little peek, that🐭’s all. I need to see a few cards. It’s TCG foreplay, and I won’t be satisfied without it.
Four Comes After One
Genetic Apex was largely focused on Kanto Pokemon and Mythical Island introduced Celebi, so many expect the next full-sized set wou🐽ld bring us to Johto for a Gen 2-themed expansion. But the next set, Space-Time Smackdown, was just revealed, and it turns out that isn’t the case at all. Instead, Pocket is skipping straight to Gen 🧔4 to give us a set full of Sinnohese (Sinnohian?) pocket monsters.
Sinnoher? Sinnohic? Sinnohish?
At first I was disappointed. Gen 2 is my personal favorite, and not just because Umbreon is my favorite Pokemon. Heartgold and Soulsilver are the best games i﷽n the series, and Johto is filled with tons of iconic Pokemon. I’m dying to see Tyranitar, Suicune, Lugia, Slowking, and Togepi make their Pocket debuts, along with so many others.
We may be waiting a while to fully explore Gen 2 in Pocket. And while this didn’t seem like good news at first, I’m now convinced this was the best move to maintain Pocket’s current momentum and ensure it keeps people playing in this pivotal moment for new live service games. O🎉nce the shine of a new game wears off, there’s a huge risk that people will move on to the next new thing. Pocket has the best chance of keeping players engaged by skipping straight to Sinnoh.
It’s The Right Time For Sinnoh
There’s a couple of reasons for this, and the first is obvious. Sinnoh’s Pokedex is absurdly stacked. I was headed for college when Diamond & Pearl came out so I don’t think of it as fondly as the earlier games, but there’s no denying that it’s chock full of icons. I mean this is the generation that gave us Lucario! This is Darkrai and Garchomp’s gen! It may not be everyone’s favorite, but it gave us Arceus, ཧthe god of Pokemon. Diamond & Pearl are clearly very important games.
Pocket needs icons right now. It needs the recognizability of Dialga and Palkia, and, maybe even more important than the Pokemon, it needs✤ Cynthia. There will come a point where there’s so many sets in the case that they’ll all just blend together, but while it's the new hot thing, it needs to hit us with both barrels right out of the gate, and a Sinnoh set is the best way to do that.
The other reason it’s best to skip Johto for now is that the main Pokemon TCG is going through a bit of a🍌 crisis thanks to Prismatic Paradox - a set based on the Eeveelutions, specifically Umbreon. This had to be a happy coincidence, I don’t expect the two teams were collaborating to ensure Pocket steered clear of Eevees this month, but it will have the effect of distancing itself from the main TCG, which is definitely a bonus right now.
Everyone has their favorite generation, and I don’t necessarily think Gen 4 is the most important, influential, or🌺 even the most stacked, but it’s got enough top-tier ‘mons in it that it’s practically a sure bet for Pocket, and at such a precarious time for the young game, that’s exactly what it needs.
