Fight Efficiently
You've only got so many, so it's best to save your bullets where possible. Run whenever you can since Enemies won't follow you into other rooms. You can also sneak past enemies with their backs turned. Walk slowly to avoid alerting them, and don't run if you can't see what's ahead. If something spots you, EnemyMusic.wav will start blaring, so fight or fly.
When you have to fight, holding the aim button for a time will make your shots more precise (like with recent Resident Evil entries) - do this to save ammo. Enemies writhing on the ground can be finished off without using bullets - do this quickly before they get back up. Using a stun prod can knock an enemy down for you to finish, but only use these when necessary, as they're single-use and limited.
Even 'finished-off' enemies can get back up if you hang around for too long. No loitering!
Safe Room To The Rescue
Signalis has no checkpoints or autosaving, so save regularly in safe rooms. Save points are marked by a red TV. You'll also get an item box in each safe room, with the contents shared between every box (sounds familiar).
You've only got six item slots, so come back and dump items you can do without to ensure you've got space when needed. The photo you get near the start is a good thing to dump, provided you value extra ammo over sentimentality. There are multiple types of healing items, and each takes up its own slot, so feel free to dump some of those, too.
Your inventory can fill up quickly, so if you're happy to take the risk - store additional weapons and ammo in item boxes.
Search Thoroughly
This is a classic concern for any survival horror game. Items and notes can blend in with the environment. Walk around the edges of rooms and ensure you're not missing anything - items nearby will be highlighted. Even if not, you should still ♔try and interact with anything that looks significant; you can get some𝓡 unique flavor text by doing so.
The same principle applies when Signalis puts you into a first-person perspective for specific areas. Look around to find the important stuff, and try to always have at least one inventory slot free for when you come across something new.
Now That's A Good Map
The map will update as you explore, showing the status of each door. Red means inaccessible, Blue means open, and yellow means you'll need a key (or it opens from the other side). Interact with every door you come across; this will save it on the map. In the environment, doors are generally marke👍d on the floor by a yellow and black line.
Interacting with any yelloಞw-marked door wi🃏ll tell you exactly which key it needs.
Certain things you'll need to come back to, such as a safe you lack the code for, will also be highlighted on the map for later. If you can't remember where something significant is, chances are it's labeled on the map.
Read, Inspect, Mess Around A Bit
As well as providing you with all the juicy lore, reading notes and everything else you come across can provide essential information on how to prog♓ress or complete puzzles. Inspecting items in the menu ♏can also be helpful - by rotating a photo to find a hidden message, for example.
The notes and other documents you find are kept in the Diagnostics menu for future reference.
Once you have it, the radio can also provide you with important information - such as codes for safes. The radio itself ca🥂n even be the solution to c💦ertain puzzles.
It's Not Survival Horror Unless There Are Tank Controls
Want a more classic experience? By that, we mean harder to control and straight out of the PS1. If so, head to the menu and enable tank controls. Slow, stiff ✅goodness. Scarier than any flesh-eating mons𒅌ter.
There are other handy customization options in the options menu too, such as automatic reloading and Quick EIG, which automatically equips stun prods. By default, stun prods need to be equipped after you pick one up, so if you're liable to forget, maybe turn that one on.
