Saturday Night Live came back for a surprise episode last night, and one of the sketches poked fun at streamers. The short sketch hit all the marks one might expect of "gamer" parodies - the fake streamer exaggerated everyꦏ moment, started his stream by ꦡasking for subscriptions, and raged as soon as he lost - but also contained one noticeable mistake.
Since social distancing isn't ending for a while, the SNL cast decided to experiment with an entirely shot-at-home episode. The effort was called SNL At Home and featured the cast sending in webcam sketches. As a result, there were many parodies of online videos. There was a tween Youtuber who thought the Invisible Man from the new movie was hot, bashing TikTok over its low-effort content, and satire of Call of Duty: Warzone's recent dominance of Twitch.
Cast member Mikey Day plays CamPlayzDat, a Twitch streamer who is finally jumping on the Warzone bandwagon. He sucks at it, though, and that's the joke. He dies as soon as he spawns, and keeps dying. Eventually he decided the game sucks because he can't win. Then he decides to speedrun the original Super Mario Bros. on a whim. Spoilers: he dies doing that, too.
One odd thing viewers did note was that the footage was not actually from Warzone. Instead, he seems to be playing regular Call of Duty Free For All. The likely reason for this is that they needed specific shots, such as him dying right from spawn. Those are easier to set up on small maps with bots than🥃 they are in the large, unpredictable battle roya🌟le mode.
That gripe aside, most comments on the sketch seem positive. Even if the "haha gamer rage" joke is overdone, Day did accurately channel the dudebro persona of many wannabe gaming stars. He even had the music and flashy logo in his intro, although that's more of a Youtube thing. Still, his exaggerated bravado (and subsequent descent into childish insults) is recognizable to any🐬one familiar with streamers. Low hanging fruit as the joke may have been, it definitely strikes a recognizable chord. Overall the sketch, and SNL At Home as a whole, managed to impress considering the constraints they were created under.
