That isn’t a judgment on the game itself, just its release date. At Gamescom Opening Night Live, Xbox announced that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will ꧙hit Xbox andꦕ PC on December 9 (with the PS5 release set for Spring 2025). Is it possible that Xbox and MachineGames are so far ahead of the curve that they can send the game to reviewers before voting starts? Yes, but it’s not likely. This effectively means that an entire month of the calendar year consistently gets ignored in GOTY discussions. Though games that release after the deadline are eligible in the next calendar year, no one is still thinking about games from the previous December when the next voting period rolls around. Voters may not even know that they're eligible.
In some cases this delay can be a good thing. If Cyberpunk 2077 had been eligible for The Game Awards in 2020, it might have secured several nominations, including Game of the Yeꦐar, on the strength of pre-release hype and early PC reviews. By the time the 2021 show rolled around, the deep problems with the game were widely known and it only notched noms for Best RPG and Best Score and Music. It won neither.
Some time between a game's release and the nomination period is for the best as it gives it time to move past the initial hype. Which really is just an argument for pushing The Game Awards back into January, preferably late January, and nominating games released from January 1 through December 31. Consider the whole year, not just the first 11 months. That isn't happening this year, though, which means that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle has little hope of securing any nominations. Unless it's incredible, it probably won't get its flowers in 2025 either. It's a big IP game published by Microsoft, so it will probably still sell well. But, it's a bummer that worthy games get left out each year for no reason other than the month they were released.
