Prior to release, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart was marketed as one of the first PS5 games that would truly showcase the power of the console. Its PS5 exclusivity was apparently due to the console's fancy SSD, as the game's rift mechanics were too advanced and complex for the PS4 to handle. Now that Rift Apart can be played on a range of hardware thanks to its PC port, hardware publication Digital Foundry decide﷽d to see if Insomniac's claims were true and tested the game out on a base PS4's HDD (thanks ).
You probably won't be too surprised to hear that Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart does indeed struggle a great deal, the video of which you can view down below, which was shared by Digital Foundry journalist John Linneman. Right from the get go you can see the gaꦍme stuttering as Ratchet walks around the world, but things take a turn for the 🌺worse when he enters a rift, as the game freezes for a solid minute while it loads the next area, all the while poor Ratchet is left dangling inbetween dimensions.
So if you needed proof that Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart was only made possible thanks to the PS5, there it is. We shouldn't really have doubted those﷽ claims in the fir🃏st place, and Insomniac Games director of community and marketing James Stevenson wasted no time telling gamers "I told you so" via . Next time Insomniac says something is impossible on older hardware, we should probably just take its word for it.
