Summary

  • Movie tie-ins have evolved from mediocre games to honoring source material.
  • Asymmetrical multiplayer in games like Predator: Hunting Grounds and Friday the 13th enhances the horror experience.
  • Jurassic World Evolution 2 allows players to build their own safe dinosaur amusement park.

During 🌱the early 2000s, you could almost guarantee that when a movie was released, a video game tie-in would launch alongside it. The PS2 and PS3 catalogs were filled with these games, most of which failed to impress the critical community. As the years dragged on, publishers began to focus on their own IP.

Every singlꦗe one of these P𓃲S4 games is a must-play.

This didn't stop games based on movies from being made, but it did alter the surrounding strategy significantly. Instead of waiting for a movie in a prominent series to release and then putting out a mediocre game alongside it, publishers now seek out talented developers to make a product that honors the source material.

10 Evil 🥃Dead: The Game

Groovy

Ash and friends preparing for battle in Evil Dead: The Game.

In 1981, Sam Raimi introduced us to Ash Williams, a wise-cracking college student who is forced to fight the forces of hell after choosing the wrong spot to vacation. The series had a few console games produced in the early 2000s, but no one was able to capture the true essence of the series until Saber Interactive's effort in 2022.

The simply titled Evil Dead: The Game is a PvPvE multiplayer game where survivors fend off the Deadite hordes and another player controls the Kandarian Demon. The survivors win by collecting pages of the Necronomicon, while the D🌃emon player works to kill them all. It encapsulates the entire Evil Dead franchise and places it into a digestible multiplayer game, resulting in a great tribute to longtime fans.

9 Lego Marvel's Avengers

Avengers Assemble

Iron Man flying above New York with aliens surrounding him in Lego Marvel's Avengers.

The Lego game heyday is largely considered to be during the PS3 generation, but the Danish giant and Traveller's Tales have continued to produce titles into later console generations. When Marvel's cinematic universe had truly cemented itself as a cultural touchstone in the early 2010s, a brick-based video game was sure to follow, and in 2016, we received Lego Marvel's Avengers.

The game was built around Avengers: Age of Ultron, but also sought to highlight climactic moments from other movies. This led to a very non-linear campaign, with levels jumping all over the timeline to explore key character moments. It may not be as good as Lego Marvel Super Heroes, but it's another great game to jump into if you can't get enough MCU.

8 Predator: Hunting ܫGrounds

"If It Bleeds, We Can Kill It."

The Predator holding a skull as a trophy in Predator: Hunting Grounds.

The Predator has quite a storied history in video games, having fought the Xenomorphs many times in the Alien vs. Predator subseries. However, they don't have many solo outings, with one of the few notable examples being Concrete Jungle, a game that was critiqued heavily by reviewers and fans alike. Thankfully, Hunting Grounds launched in 2020, delivering the ultimate Predator experience.

💙Players take control of an elite strike force tasked with gunning down AI-controlled enemies and completing objectives. Meanwhile, another player takes control of the legendary Predator, trying to kill all the soldiers and claim their spines as trophies. The asymmetrical multiplayer setup encourages team play and strategizing as if you were actually being hunted by an authentic Yautja.

7 ꦫ Cars 3: Driven To Win 𒀰

"Kachow!"

Disney largely stopped contracting developers for tie-in projects in the late 2000s, but that didn't stop Avalanche Software from creating a game for 2017's Cars 3. Driven to Win is a direct sequel to their previous work on Cars 2 in terms of gameplay and also expands on single-player offerings.

Players take part in high-speed races with iconic Cars characters. However, much like other kart racing games, these aren't just simple tests of driving skill; there's also an arsenal of weapons you use to blast your opponents out of the way. For the solo player, there's a new Playground mode that allows you to complete challenges and earn character rewards. Driven to Win is a great arcade racing option for PlayStation fans looking for a Mario Kart alternative.

6 Friday The 13th: The Game ꦉ

Jason's Revenge

A survivor being chased by Jason in Friday the 13th: The Game.

Asymmetry seems to be the recipe for success when it comes to adapting horror movies to the gaming medium. Years before releasing Predator: Hunting Grounds, developer IllFonic brought one of the most famous movie slashers back to li💙fe in Friday the 13th: The Game.

The game's structure mirrors the film's plot, with a group of teenagers trying to escape Camp Crystal Lake and other iconic franchise locations as Jason attempts to slay them all. Jason is no ordinary killer, though, as he has a variety of supernatural abilities he can use to make life more difficult for the counselors. Support for the game was sadly shuttered due to licensing disputes, but the online modes remain active.

5 ꦗ ꧒Jurassic World Evolution 2

Sparing No Expense

A dinosaur roaring in Jurassic World: Evolution 2.

Throughout the Jurassic Park franchise, a parade of shortsighted egotists convince themselves they will be able to open a commerܫcial attraction filled with dangerous creatures, and no one will get hurt. When something eventually does go wrong, the audience has very little sympathy, as they recognize the plan was flawed from the start. Thus, Jurassic World Evolution 2 presents an intriguing challenge for its players: build a safe dinosaur amusement park.

4 Mad Max

Underrated And Overlooked

An enemy trying to jump onto Max's car in Mad Max.

Given the rave reviews Mad Max: Fury Road and Furiosa received, you might think that a game based in the same world would be a massive hit. Unfortunately, Warner Brothers made the decision to release their Mad Max game on September 1, 2015, the same day as Metal Gear Solid 5. While the game sold poorly at the time, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:it's been reevaluated and has developed a cult following.

You control the titular Mad Max and are given a vast open world to explore. Max traverses it in his car, the Magnum Opus, which you can upgrade over the course of the game. During the moments you find yourself on foot, the game features a melee combat system lifted straight from the Batman: Arkham series, allowing for fluid and brutal takedowns of enemies. If you're looking for more Mad Max, give this game a chance.

3 Star Wars Batt꧒lefront 2 🗹

Redemption In A Galaxy Far, Far Away

When EA's Battlefront 2 first hit store shelves, it was rightly criticized for its overly aggressive monetization scheme, which directly impacted player progression. The backlash ultimately pushed the publisher in the right direction, deemphasizing the game's reliance on lootboxes. Many years of support later, it stands as one of the PS4's best Star Wars games.

Battlefront 2 aims to capitalize on the fantasy of all Star Wars fans: letting them participate in the galaxy's biggest battles. It's a significant upgrade from its 2015 predecessor, adding more playable factions, heroes, planets, and modes. It's also visually stunning to this day; the developers across both titles and were given access to props from the films to model them accurately. Battlefront 2 is a must-play for any hardcore Star Wars fan.

2 ও Ratchet & Clank

Yes, There Was A Movie

Ratchet running from enemies in Ratchet & Clank.

This might seem like ⭕a bizarre inclusion on a list of movie games until you remember that Ratchet & Clank did get the cinematic treatment in 2016. That ill-fated venture bombed at the box office and was ravaged by critics, but launching alongside the film was☂ a new Insomniac-developed game, which fared much better.

Both the film and game adapt the plot of the first entry in the series, making the PS4 project a remake of sorts, albeit one that tries to tie into the movie's version of events. While that may sound confusing, the game manages to stand on its own two feet, bringing Ratchet's signature action-adventure gameplay to the next generation. There's still debate among fans over the changes made to the original, but it remains a fantastic experience regardless.

1 ꦛ Alien: Isolation

Survival Horror Perfection

The Xenomorph standing in front of a green light in Alien: Isolation.

This list has covered a lot of 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:iconic horror icons (and there were a few we had to leave off), but there's perhaps no scarier movie monster than the Xenomorph. Considered the "perfect organism", they're vicious killers, capable of reducing even hardened soldiers to nothing but bloody bits. Thus, they're perfect for a horror game because your objective is not to kill them, but to survive.

In Alien: Isolation, you take control of Ripley's daughter as she tries to figure out what happened to her mom following the events of the first film. As you explore the space station Sevastopol, you're stalked by a Xenomorph. The Alien has incredibly complex behavior AI, making it difficult to hide or predict its movements. Af༒teꦗr the disappointment that was Colonial Marines in 2013, Isolation pro🧸ved the franc𒈔hise could be done justice in the gaming medium.
