While the two genres may seem strikingly similar🍎, they're quite different when you look at them.

For those unfamiliar, there are five different role♒s in Predecessor, one role for each player on the team. Each role fills a particular function, filling one of three lanes and/or working between the lanes to rotate through the match as needed. Each role has different characters that are well-suited to it, and every༺ character in the game has some very different abilities available to them.

Roles in this list have🌜 been ranked by their ease to play effectively.

5 Support

Not Your Friendly Neighborhood Healer

The Support role in Predecessor wins out over Offlane in terms of ease of use simply because the Support role (should) have ꦺbackup in their lane. The Support player is meant to do exactly what it sounds like they're meant to do𒀰: they're there to support their teammates. Different characters excel at doing this in different ways, but in general, the Support plays near the Carry.

The Carry's job is to do as much damage as they possibly can, but they're a bit of a glass cannon. Th♌e Support keeps the Carry alive to do what they need to do, and it's a symbiotic relationship that should make everyone happy, other than the other team. They probably won't be too happy.

There are fewer characters specifically suited for Support than there are for the other roles in the game, but that does mean there are fewer characters to be familiar with for a new player. Contrary to classical support roles in many thinౠgs, Supports aren't only there to heal teammates. In fact, there are plenty of Support characters who cannot he♔al anybody whatsoever, at least without the aid of items.

But characters like Dekker, for example, can limit enemy movement, either by slowing them or trapping them. Steel limits enemies' ability to cause damage and can create safe(ish) areas, while Narbash can more traditionally heal teammates, among other things. For the most part, the S﷽upport either buffs allies or makes it more difficult 𝓰for the enemy to do their job. Either way, it makes the Carry's job of indiscriminate destruction a little bit easier.

4 Offlane

Self-Sufficient

The Offlane role in Predecessor generally needs to be comfortable playing that lane on their own, most of the time. While t🅰hat might seem counter-intuitive for someone familiarizing themselves with everything, Offlane is probably the most straightforward role in the game, with plenty of heroes well-suited to new players.

You're placed in a lane on the edge of the map, meaning you're quite a bit less likely to get ambushed by someone in the middle. For the most part, you have one other player enemy you'll be dealing with, at least in the early going, and that's the🦄 other Offlane player.

Offlane characters can usually take a bit of a beating, with abilities that fulfill a variety of functions, like damage, healing, and mobility. These characters need to realistically be able to fight one or two other enemies at a time without dying immediately, and smart use of their abilities does just that. It doesn't mean you can wade into danger without any regard; you can still die in the blink of an✅ eye if you play foolishly.

But play your lane, especially in the early going, pushing the enemy turret when the opportunity presents itself and falling back when it's necessary. Later in the game, you'll probably be on the frontlines of the fight, either defending your core or attacking the enemy core, and you'll need to ✨be leveled up in order to be of much use.

3 Midlane

The Midlane role plays, unsurprisingly, in the middle lane. Midlanes can ཧbe a variety of different characters or have varying strengths, but in general, the Midline needs to be aware of both of their sides, as well as the other Midlaner. The Midlane has blind spots on both sides of them, and anyone can rotate into the Midlane from either side.

Ward placement is going to be paramount here to keep yourself from getting ambushed too easily, and knowing when to back off, or when not to push too far, is going to be important. Midlane is not quite🔯 as simple as Offlane.

Midlane 🐼also should be ready to rotate out of their lane to help other lanes when needed. Tossing three heroes in one lane to overpower it can be important, and understanding when to do it can be tough. In general, Midlaners🐈 have ranged abilities.

They don't usually have an𒀰 overabundance of health, but they have the firepower 𝓡to make up for it. Know when to shoot your shot and know when to back off and play near your turret, and you'll do well.

2 Carry

The Glass Cannon

The Carry generally plays with the Support on the opposite lane from the Offlane. The Carry is capable of a ludicrous display of violence, but they are also capable of being turned into a greasy smear on the wall with r🍌elatively little effort from the enemy. With such little survivability, the Support should usually be somewhere nearby to keep them on their feet.

When Supported well,ꦑ the Carry should be doing untold damage to t🦩he enemy team, pushing toward the enemy turret and worrying the enemy heroes that stray inside their range.

Speaking of, Carry's are generally ranged characters. Most of their abilities are focused on dealing damage, either by buffing their basic attacks or by an active damaging ability. Most of their Ultimate abilities revolve around doing significant damage, 🌠too; Murdock's ability fires a sniper shot, for example.

This sniper shot is a great way to finish off 🥂an enemy below half health or take out a huge amount of minions that need to be pu♓t down quickly.

1 Jungle

Go Wild

The Jungle role is usually going to take quite a bit of game knowledge to play properly, simply because the role does not put them in a certain lane. The Jungle has neutral minions that spawn, and killing those minions grants XP and certain buffs, either just to you or sometimes to your entire team. Tꩵhese buffs can turn the tide of the battle, but you'll often be competing with the enemy jungler for them.

Apart fr🌳om that, the Jungler should be dipping out of the Jungle into other lanes to give that lane an advantage. The Jungle should be ambushing enemies and taking them down before they can🤪 escape, creating an imbalance in that lane and allowing that lane's hero(es) to get some significant damage in on a turret. There are a variety of Junglers in the game, supporting a few different types of play.
