Summary
- Sony is releasing an adapter for PlayStation VR2 to work with PCs, but it may be too late to gain any significant market value.
- PS VR2 sold poorly due to high price and lack of game library, falling behind competitors in the VR market.
- The upcoming adapter may add utility for current PS VR2 owners, but likely won't attract new VR users to the headset.
It looks like will be releasing an adapter that allows 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:PlayStation VR2 to work wi💮th , but I fear this move is coming far too late to solve its biggest issues.
As first spotted by and then reported by , the states that an adapter was submitted and approved for ce🥂rtification in March. We don’t know when it will be officially announced, released, or even how mucಌh it will cost, but Sony did previously announce in February that it was testing PC compatibility for the headset.
When TheGamer 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:reviewed it early last year, reviewer and Editor-in-Chief Stacey Henley said that it was the best VR headset she’d ever used, with its issues “far outweighed by its technical efficiency”, but its price tag was a dealbreaker. Indeed, the masses seemed to agree – the hardware, while impressive, didn’t sell well for Sony. It sold so poorly that, in March, Sony 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:put production of the PS VR2 on hold as stock piled up.
Its $600 price tag is $100 more than the newest 128GB Meta Quest headset, though it’s $50 cheaper than the most expensive 512GB version. It also seems to be on sale right now, at least in my local store, putting it roughly on par with the a𒅌lso discounted PS5 Slim.
Nobody Owns A PS VR2
The bigger issue is that the PS VR2 just doesn’t have man🤡y games in its library, and being able to mod VR games on PC is a huge selling point for the Meta Quest and other similar headsets that make their price much more justifiable.
I don’t own the second-gen version of the headset, but my brother did buy me the original PS VR for my birthday a c🐟ouple of years ago. I was hyped to play Beat Saber, which I did for a couple of days, before I realised that I was limited to the songs on the original soundtrack – if I wanted to have access to more songs, I would have to shell out some cold, hard cash for additional music packs. In contrast, if I’d been playing on PC, I would have been able to install custom maps and new songs fairly easily without having to pay more.
Beat Sa♓ber struggles aside, in 2024, there just isn’t anything to play. A quick glance at the available games shows me that no games have even been added this year, though tomorrow’s State of Play could change that. Maybe in a couple of hours the $600 headset will actually be worth owning, but I doubt it. If you like VR games, you likely have already opted for a PC-co🧜mpatible headset – at this point, PlayStation is very far from being the VR hub it seems to want to be.
PS VR2 PC Compatibility Is Too Little, Too Late
Unfortunately, I doubt the adapter will work for the first-gen PS VR, which means that my headset will continue to languish in a cupboard in my parents’ house, untouched and underutilised. But, if you’ve already inves▨ted in the newest hardware, the adapter is great news. Your headset, which likely has been collecting 🥃dust for months, if not years, will finally be useful.
But honestly, if you were already interested in VR, there’s a very low chance that you invested inꦺ the PS VR2 over any of the other impressive pieces of tech already on the market. While this adapter adds utility for people who already own the headset, it’s unlikely to convert anybody who’s already a regular VR user. It might entice some new players who want to be able to play on both PC and PlayStation, but again, it feels like that market has already been saturated. This is good news for consumers, but it’s not going to suddenly make the PS VR2 a bestseller.
