A couple of years ago, reports of liquid metal com🧔ponents leaking inside PS5s had people fearing their current-gen consoles were at risk of breaking far earlier than they have any 🐈right to. Turns out that issue didn't just go away an🥂d could be happening to more PS5s than you think.
That's according to Alderon Games' Matthew Cassells. Speaking on the Broken Silicon podcast (thanks, ), Cassells explained that multiple players of Alderon's Path of Titans were reporting back that their PS5s were shutting down unprompted while playing the game. Alderon devꩵs recommended removing the console's case and cleaning the interior♈, but that didn't seem to fix the problem.
The PS5 Still Has A Liquid Metal Problem
If Your Console Keeps Cutting Out, This Might Explain Why
The more attention Alderon gave to the problem, the more people came forward to reveal it was happening to them too, including some who had experienced the issue while playing other games. It seems that the problem can be traced back to the PS5's liquid metal issue. The liquid metal that's designed to cool the console can reportedly drip down to the bottಞom of the PS5. That, in turn, leaves dry spots where the liquid metal is supposed to be, and that seems to be what's causing PS5s to shut down mid-game.
Alderon reached out to PlayStation to discuss the issue and discovered that the more demanding a game gets, the more likely it is to suffer from this pretty worrying liquid metal problem. It's a problem PlayStation is aware of and one that it has tried to fix since the issue first reared its head in 2023. Newer models of the PS5, including the slimmer version and the PS5 Pro, have ridges that are designed to prevent the liq🍌uid metal fr♎om getting to places it shouldn't.
Maybe PlayStation Should Offer Free Repairs For The Problem
Seems Like The Right Thing To Do If You Ask Me
The jury's still out on whether that fix actually works. That also doesn't help anyone who bought a PS5 at launch. Their consoles could already be affected or break within the next few years. Even though the PS5s affected will be out of warranty, Cassells suggested PlayStation offer a free repair service for anyone who encounters the issue, similar to what Xbox did for the 360's red ring of death, or Nintendo's commitment to fix d🐠rifting Joy-Con for free.
No word yet on whether PlayStation plans to act on that advice. It may be a caꦿse of the console creator waiting to see how widespread a problem this becomes. For now, the best way to combat the liquid metal problem affecting your PS5 is to store it horizontally. The issue is more likely to damage your PS5 when it's upright.
