Panic held its fꦆor the Playdate this morning, and it came with a series of exciting announcements. In addition to revealing that pre-orders for the handheld console would begin in July, the update included info about new games, a special Bluetooth stereo dock accessory, and a browser-based game development tool.

The Playdate is a unique take on the handheld console. Developed in collab𒐪oration with Teenage Engineering, it is advertised as a tiny, handheld gaming system with a high-contrast black and white screen and a crank that can be used as anal꧅og input. The console will reportedly sell for $179 USD and will include 24 free games that will be released across a series of 12 weeks.

ꦏPerhaps the most exciting news of the update was the reveal of many of the 24 games thaꦉt are to be included in Season One of the console’s game collection, along with a preview of some of the other developers that Panic will be partnering with. Here are 21 of the titles we can expect from the first season:

  • Battleship Godios
  • Boogie Loops
  • Casual Birder
  • DemonQuest 85

If the reveal of Season One’s titles wasn’t enough, the update also came with an announcement about a special Bluetooth stereo dock accessory that will be available to purchase sometime in the future. The Playdate Stereo Dock will have several functions, including charging station, pen holder (yes, you read that right), and Bluetooth speaker. Users can even download an app, Poolsuite FM for Playdate, to listen to a playlist made specially for 🍸the console.

Panic doesn’t want the f✅un to stop there, though. In an effort to make game development more accessible, it has developed a free, browser-based development tool called Pulp that will allow users to design and play their own games. They will be able to make graphics, create music, use a simple scripting language, and link rooms together to bring their idea to life. Then, once their creation is finished, users can simply press a button to add the game to their Playdate console.

The Playdate will be available for pre-order sometime in July, with a one-week notice before the official launch date. Although COVID-19 s💖hortages could potentially impact supply, Panic wants to assure the public that it will never “sell out” PS5 style. Consoles will be delivered to purchasers as they become available on a rolling basis, meaning that the sooner you order, the sooner you’ll receive a console. Not to worry though—with any luck, it'll be able to “crank” them out pretty quickly.
