Review

Our resident Features Editor, Ben Sledge, offered his opinion on Paper Mario: The Thousand Year-Door i꧃n his review. Ben notes that he’s never played Paper Mario before and, given the absurdly high prices for the original GameCube games, their arrival on the Nintendo Sw🍷itch prese𝓰nts a brand new opportunity.

Ben notes that the writing in the game is funny and that the turn-based battle is riv🦄eting. The mechanics are unique and offer some fun spice to the game, making the repetitive fetch quests tolerable. They encourage you to find new areas and to reap the rewards of making the back-and-forth journey over and over again.

These creative and original mechanics bring the game to life. You suddenly don’t care that you’re doing another fetch quest, revisiting an area you’ve wa𓆏lked through three times already, because there’s a slightly new path that’s opened up, and your shortcut is rewarded with a Shine Sprite▨ or health-restoring mushroom.

With each level so different from the other, they all have their own unique charms🐈. However, the weakest point of the game is the backtracking and the game’s pacing.

According to Ben, there are times when the battles can become a hassle to get through, where you’re just going through waves of grunts with no real purpose or battle diversity. The story isn’t strong enough in some areas, like the wrestling level, to carry the excitemen🍎t through the tedium.

With the story sections between levels, you’re doing﷽ a lot of reading, which, in turn, can lead to a lot of button-mashing to try to get back to the gameplay. He feels🔥 that some proper voice acting in these sections could do them more justice and make them enjoyable breaks from Mario.

Ben played Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door on the Nintendo Sw꧅itch and gave it 4/5 stars.

Time Expenditure

The main story for🉐 Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is likely going to take you around 30-35 hours to progrꦗess through. However, if you’re looking at doing all of the side quest content and attempting to 100 percent the game, then you’ll be in-game for around 40 hours.

Although it’s a hefty price, it’s still relatively standard for most modern Nintendo publications. What Players Are Saying

Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door Thwomp

A Real Page-Turner - Kyle Chamaillard

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is my favorite game of all ti🤪me, and just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, an improved version arrives on the Nintendo Switc💯h with incredible quality-of-life updates. It looks fantastic, the writing is top-notch, and the battle system is so good that Nintendo should really consider revisiting it for the next entry in the series.

Fromﷺ the foot-tapping soundtrack to the memorable cast of characters, I could go on and on about why I think The Thousand-Year Door is a masterpiece. If you’ve never played it before, prepare for an adventure that soars higher than🎉 a paper plane.

The Perfect RPG For Newcomers - PJ Molloy

As someone who rarely plays RPGs, I'm often unenthused by many of the genre's offerings. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door provides so many fun twists on the traditional turn-based format that even a complete newcomer like me was enthralled from start to finish.

The action commands and stylish moves are faithfully preserved in the remake, keeping you constantly involved in combat even after your turn. For me, this is a massive improvement from selecting an attack and watching everything play out for you. Moreover, the numerous quality-of-life updates make the gameplay more accessible than ever. If you're new to RPGs, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is the best way to start.

Surprisingly Cozy - Tallis Spalding

I have never played a Paper Mario game before and, generally💝, have found that most Mario games are not my cup of tea. However, I have found that Paper Mario is a surprisingly cozy and comforting game to play. There are times when things are tense, or I curse out the minor platforming, but overall, I find myself relaxed while playing. The stakes aren’t super high and it’s a good game to wind down the day with.

Although I don’t care for all of the companions, I find myself incredibly empathetic to the plights of some, like Vivian, and want nothing more than to make sure t☂hat things turn out all right for my favorite characters. The narrative is compelling enough, and the dialogue is frankly baffling at times, but it’s still fun! Even if you don’t like Mario, but you find yourself fond of cozy games, I highly🔯 recommend giving it a shot.
