The first gun you'll be able to unlock in the game is the Musket. It hits harder than the Crossbow, but the tradeoff is a longer reload time. You can unlock this using your Technology Points that you earn from leveling up on Tier 21, along with the recipes for Gunpowder and Coarse Ammo.
The more you level up, the more guns and ammo you have the potential to unlock and craft.
