Summary

  • Nintendo has predicted the Switch 2 will sell 15 million units in its first year in its latest financial report.
  • If achieved, that would be the same as the PS5 and the PS4 managed in their respective first years combined.
  • It would also beat the 14.86 million record set by the original Switch.

Nintendo has high hopes for the Switch 2. The company filed for the year ending March 31, 2025, and in it, Nintendo has noted that it expects to sell 15 million Switch 2 consoles by the end of the current financial year.

If Nintendo achieves that, it will make the Switch 2's console launch one of the most successful of all time. The original Switch sold 14.86 million consoles during its first year, an incredible achievement, and Nintendo thinks its sequel will better that. Impreꩵssive all by itself, but even more so when you factor in the Switch 2 not having a full year to hit that goal like its predecessor.

Nintendo Has High Hopes For The Switch 2's First Year

It Thinks A Least 15 Million Of Us Will Have One By This Time Next Year

Nintendo isn't only expecting the Switch 2 to far outsell the PS5's first-year sales. Since the PS4's sales are roughly the same as the console that replaced it during its own first year, Nintendo's next console is predicted to do as well, or better, than the PS5 and PS4 did from launch to the end💮 of the🎐ir first financial years combined.

On the one hand, think back to how hard it was to get a PS5 at launch. Almost impossible, 🍷and even though other elements need to b🎃e considered, like a shortage of semiconductors, Nintendo is expecting to double that number. On the other hand, the gap between the Switch 2's launch and the end of its first FY is longer than the PS5's.

The PS5 launched in November 2020 and the financial year ended a little more than four months later. The same applies to the🧸 PS4. However, even when g🧔iven a full calendar year, neither the PS5 nor the PS4 managed to hit 15 million units sold. It took both of PlayStation's newest consoles more than a year to achieve that.

Nintendo has already suggested it underestimated how many Switch 2s it would🍰 need out of the gate. 2.2 million people requested pre-order invites in Japan alone, and Nintendo admitted it doesn't have nearly enough to go around at launch. If you were involved in the pre-𝐆order chaos in the US, you'll know firsthand that a lot of♔ people want Nintendo's next-gen console as soon as possible.
