2024 will be home to an equal blend of sequels, legacy sequels, prequels, legacy prequels, threequels, -quels so high we don't have words for them (Saw will become an hendecogy, apparently), spin-offs, remakes, and just for fun, some original stories too. It's likely a little overstuffed with the strike pushing some of 2023's later movies back to allow for more robust promotion, and that can make it hard to know what to look out for. Luckily, we've got you covered.

While some of these movies span genres, we've stuck with the one that fits them best, and left room for some wonky polygons that don't quite fit any of these neat square holes.

Comedy

Deadpool 3 Wolverine
  • Deadpool 3: This is the only MCU movie of 2024, which in and of itself paints a picture of a changing movie landscape. Relying on an R-rated comedy threequel a decade later to keep your media machine going is a big risk, but if any movie can shoulder the burden, it's probably Deadpool.
  • Drive-Away Dolls: Ethan Coen is taking Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, and Beanie Feldstein on a road trip in 2024, with laughs, love, and crime in equal measure.
  • Mean Girls: An adaptation of the stage musical which was itself an adaptation of the original movie (which, in turn, was based on a book), Mean Girls is modernised with a sprinkle of nostalgia, and could be a breakout role for Renee Rapp as Regina George.
  • Lisa Frankenstein: Directed by Zelda Williams (daughter of Robin), this horror comedy about rebuilding a dead boyfriend out of freshly murdered body parts is one of 2024's most intriguing offerings.
  • The American Society of Magical Negroes: This fantasy comedy looks set to be a satire in the vein of Sorry To Bother You, where an underground group of Black wizards conspire to aid white folks in their everyday lives - it could miss the mark wildly, but I'm glad we get movies like this alongside Ryan Reynolds having a third go around at breaking the fourth wall and swearing.

Action

Anya Taylor Joy as Furiosa surrounded by flames
  • Furiosa - A Mad Max Saga: This Fury Road prequel stars Anya Taylor-Joy as a younger Furiosa, and looks to be every inch the colourful and carnage-filled spectacle of director George Miller's previous works.
  • Ballerina: Much like the above, this might as well be called Ballerina - 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:A John Wick Saga, and still might get a Wicky name change before it launches. Starring Ana de Armas as the Ballerina as it explores more of Wick's world, it remains to be seen if it can live up to the original quadrilogy's intensity.
  • Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes: The recent Apes trilogy always feels a little underrated both from a technical perspective and as action movies in their own right, but hopefully the fourth go around (which moves the story forward by decades and abandons Caesar) gets the credit it deserves.
  • Borderlands: Look, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:I'm still rooting for it, okay?
  • Argylle: I am as irritated by the trailer as the rest of you, but it can't put me off watching Bryce Dallas Howard as the hapless author in a world where her imagination is too close to reality, featuring John Cena and Dua Lipa as spies along for the ride in this comedy caper.

Horror

Lily-Rose Depp with a monster's shadowy hand in Nosferatu
  • Untitled Jordan Peele Project: Obviously there's not much to say about this yet with so few details, but it's Jordan Peele and that's the only selling point it needs.
  • Nosferatu: Robert Eggers is another name that sells a project on its own, and this fresh take on the old vampiric legend is sure to sink its visual fangs into your eyeballs. Or you know, something less gross.
  • I Saw The Glow: A teenager becomes obsessed with a cancelled TV series and his reality suddenly merges with the one he saw on screen in what could be A24's next cult hit.
  • The Watchers: Who watches The Watchers is the question Ishana Night Shylamalan, daughter of M. Night, asks in her directorial debut about creatures lurking in an Irish forest.
  • Hellboy - The Crooked Man: Hellboy hasn't always had the best of times on screen, but The Crooked Man takes him back to the 1950s in a more imaginative adaptation than 2019's failed reboot

Drama

Zendaya smiling in a tracksuit in Challengers
  • Challengers: This tennis love triangle was one of 2023's most high profile strike delays this summer, and will be served up for audiences in 2024 instead.
  • Mickey 17: Bong Joon-ho has a new legion of fans after Parasite, and this sci-fi drama of worker commodification seems to be aiming at the same class struggle talking points.
  • Joker - Folie a Deux: The Joker sequel is a Lady Gaga-led musical, and the fact this seems so opposed to what those who have misunderstood and co-opted Joker would want already makes this a winner in my book.
  • A Different Man: You probably think Sebastian Stan has a nice enough face, but in A Different Man, he drastically transforms it via surgery for the role he thinks he was born to play.
  • Perfect: Olivia Wilde has a hit (Booksmart) and a miss (Don't Worry Darling) under her belt as a director, but Perfect, which tells the story of the 1996 US Olympic gymnastics team through the eyes of injured athlete Kerri Strug, is her chance to solidify her stature.

Movies You Haven't Heard Of But Should Look Out For Anyway

Melissa Barerra dancing in Your Monster

Sure, maybe you haven't heard of some of the other ones anyway. But we've tried to hit the biggest, most recognisable titles in each genre that will likely be the ones to drive conversations and box office numbers. These others might not be as well known, but they have the coveted TheGamer stamp of 'these look quite good'.

  • Your Monster: All eyes are on Melissa Barrera after her exit from Scream, but Your Monster (which sees her befriend a hideous monster in her closet) is more in line with the artistically driven flicks like Carmen and All The World is Sleeping she made away from Ghostface anyway.
  • Winner: Part-coming of age tale, part-political thriller, Emilia Jones stars as a young and idealistic whistleblower in the US Air Force.
  • The Outrun: Soairse Ronan stars as a young woman who leaves London for her home in the rural Scottish Orkney Island, looking to lose, and find, herself amongst the trees.
  • Love Lies Bleeding: Recently described by my colleague Tessa Kaur as 'made for lovers 🌳of Abby from The Last of Us Part 2', this bodybuilding queer love drama could become a major hit for the right audience.
  • Ponyboi: Treading similar ground to 2022's Joyland, Ponyboi tells the tale of an intersex sex worker on the run from the mob.
