Luckily, every hunter has base-level training in all forms of weaponry that are specifically designed to take down the large monsters you're bound to encounter. Since monsters come in all types of builds, there are some weapons that are tailored to be more effective based on your target. However, with enough practice and effort, you can design a Long Sword to carry you through any hunt.

What Are Long Swords?

There are a variety of weapons to wield as a hunter with a majority being bladed or piercing in some form. Of those weapons, there are several varieties of sword-like options that range from comically large to surprisingly sleek. Swords are one of the most well-rounded weapon types boasting mobility, attack, and defense.

The sword that captures this most effectively on its own is the Long Sword. Fashioned after the ōdachi, a Japanese sword that is essentially a longer version of the katana, the Long Sword is the sword of choice for hunters who favor movement and combos.

The Long Sword is one of the most balanced weapons in the game. It deals good damage and allows you to move around quickly while also having a decent attack range. The key to its power is the Spirit Gauge, a red bar that will fill up during battle.

  • You'll be at your most powerful when the Spirit Gauge is full, so it's in your best interest to keep it charged. Landing successful attacks will cause it to charge, and it will start glowing red once it's full. When charging, the bar can deplete rapidly when not full, so attack consistently to prevent that from happening.
  • Long Swords are notorious for not having high Elemental Damage which makes their options limited. Your best bet is to invest in Long Swords that come with status effects such as Stun or Blast to give them an extra edge. It's also wise to invest in swords that have high Raw damage such as the Great Demon Halberd. The Non-Elemental Boost Skill can also help with this.
  • To maximize the combos and strikes of the Long Sword, you'll need to equip Skills that improve your stamina and allow you to recover quickly, so you can reduce down-time between combos. Skills that reduce stamina use in terms of movement are Constitution, Cliffhanger, Guard, and Marathon Runner. Skills that reduce how fast Stamina depletes are Hunger Resistance and Resuscitate. One of the most useful Stamina skills is Stamina Surge which can boost how fast your Stamina recovers up to 30 percent.
  • An effective way to empower your Long Sword is to use the Jewel Slots effectively. While some Jewels can grant you Stamina skills, that's best reserved for armor where it can stack. As such, it's wise to pick Jewels that allow you to fight more effectively and maintain your stance. Both the Evade Window and Flinch Free jewel skills are useful in helping prevent attacks from disrupting your movement. In terms of the weapon's behavior, a Focus jewel boosts how fast the Spirit Gauge fills, so you can power sooner and more often. Critical Eye and Critical Boost are perfect to pair together to increase the Long Sword's critical hit chance and damage.

The biggest drawback to the Long Sword is that it offers absolutely no protection. On top of equipping skills to help you evade damage, it's better to be safe than sorry by also considering skills that can boost your Resistance and raise your Defense. Such Skills include Defense Boost, Heroics, Fortify, and even Health Boost.
