What Are Reasoning Death Matches?
Every Mystery Labyrinth has Reasoning Death Matches. Your first bout is introduced early into Chapter Zero's. You'll be up against the wicked Swank of Amaterasu's Peacekeepers. He'll challenge you several times, in fact, though your final bouts in this dungeon will be against the Chapter Zero culprit. No spoilers from us on that one!
Reasoning Death Matches are designed to appear not unlike popular JRPG fights. Yuma and Shinigami stand on one side of a battlefield; the foe stands on the other. But your enemy's assault is constant. They'll be throwing attacks at you by way of words. That's right. Words.
There are four types of phrases that will come Yuma's way:
- Phrases written in white. You need to dodge these, or they'll deduct from your stamina gauge, AKA Yuma's health. They can come from above Yuma, beneath him, on either side. They can even zigzag back and forth en route to you at times. Use the directional buttons to avoid them.
- Phrases written in dark red. These are like bonus points ripe for the taking. They're irrelevant to your victory, but slashing them nets extra Detective Points. They're described as 'noise', as in background noise. We think that's an apt definition.
- Phrases written in a font that looks like flames. These are, potentially, what you will be slashing with the proper Solution Key equipped in order to defeat the Phantoms that Yuma faces in Reasoning Death Matches. Slash the phrase you believe you have evidence against; slashing the wrong ones doesn't do damage, but it resets the round.
- Phrases written in a cool blue font. These require Yuma to repel them with the specified button on screen. You won't encounter these early on, and they aren't especially common throughout most of the game.
How Do You Beat Them?
Beating Reasoning Death Matches boils down to a few things. First, as we've mentioned, you need to slash the flame-like font when these phrases come toward Yuma. But you should only slash the phrase you believe you have evidence against, as slashing the others causes a shield-like animation, and restarts the villain's current rant from scratch.
That's not the end of the world; it's just a little frustrating. Equip the correct Solution Key that you feel corresponds to the correct phrase, and you'll know you've gotten it right when Yuma gets a special animation and talks about finding the truth. He'll refute the statement. In some instances, this concludes the fight. In others, there will be multiple rounds before it's finished.
How Many Reasoning Death Matches Are In Rain Code?
Enough.
No, we'll give you a real answer. Each Mystery Labyrinth has roughly four to six Reasoning Death Matches, though don't be surprised if that number shoots up a bit toward the end. You'll frequently be facing different opponents throughout a Labyrinth, albeit a ha💫ndful of times apiece.
This can add up, and you might feel tired of them by the end of each of Rain Code's trippy dungeons. The good news is the game does a fine job of offering variety; between Shinigami Puzzles, Question Sessions, Scene Re-Creations, and more, you'll be plenty busy in other ways between bouts.
