It takes a lot for an online shooter to win me over, and outside of a few casual games here and there or a couple of evenings playing with friends online, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Marvel Rivals probably isn't going to do it. That's not necessarily the game's fault - it's as enjoyable as you'd expect 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Overwatch plus Marvel to be - but more the genre's failure to grab me as it has strangled thousands of wallets over the last decade. However, there is one hook that will keep me around for a little longer than these games usually manage - melee characters.
Part of the reason I don't play online shooters is I'm not that good at shooting. Part of the reason I'm not that good at shooting is because I don't play online shooters. It's a whole chicken and egg deal. So when I do play online shooters, I look for ways to mitigate that lack of skill. Overwatch's D.Va is probably the most success I've had with it, thanks to her tanky health bar and eject system giving me a second chance at staying alive, but heroes with area damage or rapid fire allowing for spray and pray (both of which also apply to D.Va) help too. And, now, there's melee fighters.
Marvel Rivals' Melee Combat Is A Game Changer
Melee combat is not unique to Marvel Rivals. Overwatch, the game it is most inspired by, also has a melee hero in Reinhardt, and he wasn't the first of the genre either. But there is such a focus on melee in Rivals that it feels less like a one-off gimmick and more like a core part of the game. I was instantly drawn to Magik in Marvel Rivals (inspired mostly by my lovꦫe for her in Midnight Su🐠ns), but her swordplay kept me interested.
I'm never really too sure where to put myself in shooter games, between wanting to be part of the action, the need for strategic positioning, playing my role, and never playing enough to know the map well, but melee heroes fix that. Find something to hit, then run up to it and hit it. Magik can attack from range on a cooldown, and has minor warp powers that can either dive to the most vulnerable foe or zap you out of there, but mostly, you hit people with a sword until one of you dies.
Her cyclone ability works well on crowds, and her ultimate just gives her an even bigger sword, which is highly rewarding as it just makes what you're already doing more powerful, rather than asking you to pick up something different. However, Magik is also a Duelist character, meaning she's relatively low health but highly effective one on one, so picking who you chase down with your sword still matters.
Magik is not the only melee character in the game either, with Marvel Rivals built for this sort of playstyle. Black Panther slashes at characters with his claws, while 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Spider-Man's basic web attacks are used𒈔 🎉at such a short range he becomes melee, though he does have a wider range of playstyles available. And, obviously, Hulk smash. Hulk smash a lot.
This keeps games feeling fresh and frantic. I'm not sure how long Marvel Rivals will hold my attention, but while it does, I'll be rushing sword-first into firefights every chance I get. It offers a new approach to the game that will play well with the more casual base (like myself) the IP will attract, and I'm sure in time a meta will emerge that lets different forms of high skilled players dominate Marvel Rivals matches. That won't be me, but hopefully, it could be Magik.
