Whether you’re headed to an event or just playing on Arena, you’ll want to know what The Lost Caverns of Ixalan has in store for you when you open that fir💛st pack. Here are all ten of🃏 the main archetypes of the set, and what to keep an eye out for when building it.
White/Blue: Oltec Ingenuity – Artifact Control
Artifacts are a huge part of The Lost Cavens of Ixalan, and the white/blue archetype is all about using them to keep your opponent locked down as you quietly build up a board state of your own. Its signpost uncommon isn’t a creature, but Master’s Guide-Mural makes artifact creature tokens, before you transform it into Master’s Manufactory to truly swamp the board.
To control your opponent, make use of things like Petrify, Dusk Rose Reliquary, Waylaying Pirates, Hurl Into History, Confounding Riddle, and Out Of Air. Of course, artifact-based control folds to removal and sacrifice, so make use of recursion like Oltec Archaeologists and Abuelo’s Awakening to keep yourself in the🐼 game.
Also keep an eye out for potential aဣttackers. Gnomes fill your artifact requirement, and things like Shipwreck Sentry can provide above-average damage, provided you find other ways to get artifacts entering the battlefield.
Blue/Black: Echoes Of The Dead – Descend Control
Perhaps one of the biggest criticisms to make of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan is the confusing of having two similar but different mechanics named almost identical things. Descend and Descending both care about permanents in your graveyard, but descending only cares about the act of permanent cards being put there, while descend cares much more about any permanent card already in your graveyard.
This archetype plays with the latter, needing you to fill your graveyard up and make use of descend abilities to control the game. Its signpost is Uchbenbak, the Great Mistake, which can return to ꦇplay from the graveyard if you’ve got eight permanent cards in your graveyard already.
Both descending and descend only care about permanent cards. ♕Tokens aren’t cꩵards, so they won’t count.
Waterlogged Hulk is a really powerful card for this archetype, giving you an easy way to fill your graveyard up with permanents. Focus on getting other mill effects too, like Death💮cap Marionette, Another Chance, and Song of Stupefaction. From there, lots of control pieces come online, like Council of 🍌Echoes’ bounce effect, Stinging Cave Crawler’s card advantage, and Join the Dead giving an impressive -10/-10 for just three mana.
Black/Red: Going Down! – Descending Beatdown
Blue and black care about descend, but black and red care about descending, or the actual act of dumping ꦅpermanent cards into your graveyard. That makes this a much more🤡 aggressive, impulsive deck, where you mill, discard, and sacrifice your way to victory.
The signpost is Zoyowa Lava-Tongue, which forces each opponent to either discard a card, sacrifice a permanent, or take three damage to their face, provided you’ve descended at least once that turn. You&rs🎃quo;re going to need to keep up a steady stream of permanent cards going into your graveyard.
Be careful, as Zoyowa Lava-Tongue’sꦺ ability might help some other graveyard or sacrifice-heavy archetypes by giving your opponent a free way to get permanents into their graveyard.
Throne of the Grim Captain is a must-have for this deck, as it can tap to mill two cards. If you don’t happen to pull it, rely on other mill tools like Deathcap Marionette and Screaming Phantom, discard things like Volatile Wanderglyph, or, at a push, sacr🎃ifice outlets like Acolyte of Aclazotz and Vito’s Inquisitor.
Fr♛om there, your goal is to rely on descend triggers for value. Whether it’s buffing up a Deep Goblin Skulltaker or a Child of the Volcano, or going wide with Broodrage Mycoid. Molten Collapse is also a great card, as descending lets you remove two permanents for just two mana.

Red/Green: Dinosaurs Of The Sun Empire – Dinosaur Typal
The Lost Caverns of 🐼Ixalan mostly does away with the typal focus of the first visit to Ixalan, but this arꦅchetype gives us a hint of the good ol’ days with big, stompy Dinosaurs. It’s red and green, with big creatures, just as Richard Garfield intended.
Itzquinith, Firstborn of of Gishath is your signpost, allowing you to pay two mana to blast a creature with lots of damage thanks to your other big Dinos. It’s a one-and-one effect, but as a 2/3, and with all the other Dinosaur tools on offer here, it isn’t a terrible play for t🎶wo mana.
There are so many Dinosaurs in The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. Some of the standouts include Panicked Altisaur with its repeatable damage, the hard-to-block Rampaging Ceratops, Seismic Monstrosaur for some landcycling, Hulking Raptor for ramp, Thrashing Brontodon for artifact and enchantment removal, and, of course, Ghalta, Stampede Tyrant – a pricey play that lets you dump every creature in your hand onto the battlefield.
To support your Dinos, Poetic Ingenuity is fantastic to keep you in the mana while swinging out with everything you’ve got. You’re more likely to run across things like Intrepid Paleontologist, Ixalli’s Lorekeeper, and Burning Sun Cavalry when building your deck, though, and they’re also great for smashing with a hord✱e of Diಌnos.
Green/White: Malamet Tactics – Combat Tricks Aggro
The Malamet are the Jaguar folk hidden below the surface of Ixalan, and their strategy is to go wide, buff up your creatures with combat tricks, and sneak as much damage past your opponen🅘t’s defences as possible.
Led by Kutzil, Malamet Exemplar as your signpost, they reward you buffing up your creatures by giving you card draw. However, also keep an eye out for Sovereign Okinec Ahau, a mythic rare that effectively matches your combat tricks with the❀ same number of +1/+1 counters for an infinitely growing board of massive, swingy Cats.
Uncommonly for this set, Green/White love🅺s you to have creature tokens. Envoy of Okinec Ahau and Oltec Cloud Guard can make Gnomes, Bat Colony can make Bats, and Roar of the Fifth People makes Dinosaurs. Anything you need to swing out with is fair game here.
As mentioned, combat tricks are the real goal here. These can be cast after your opponent has declared blockers, and so that tiny 1/1 Gnome can quickly become massive thanks to a cheeky Acrobatic Leaꦓp, Family Reunion, Huatli’s Final Strike, Malamet Scy༺the, or Staggering Size.
White/Black: Dusk Legion Pilgrimage – Vampire Aristocrats
Like Dinosaurs, Vampires are one of the most popular th൩ings about Ixalan, which makes their return here very much appreciated. This time, Vampires are all about sacrificing creatures and artifacts alike for profit.
Bartolomé del Presidio is not just this archetype’s signpost, it’s also one of its most powerful tools. Two mana for a free, instant-speed sacrifice outlet is great, and can enable all sorts of Aristocrats, graveyard, and descend strategies. There are also other outlets, like Acolyte of A♍clazotz, Vanguard of the Rose, Tarrian’s Journal, and Vito’s 🥀Inquisitor, all of which offer various effects for sacrificing.
Keep an eye out for anything with descending, as they’ll likely work with you sacrificing so many creatures and artifacts. Ruin-Lurker Bat offers some card advantage through💜 scrying, but the real winners here are things like Canonized In Blood to buff up your Va🧔mpires.
For sacrifice fodder, you’ll mostly be wanting artifacts like Mephitic Draught, w🙈hich draws you a card when it hits the graveyard, or Sanguine Evangelist as an easy way to make Bat creature tokens. Find graveyard reanimation like Helping Hand and Another Chance to keep your value up, and before long you’ll be blocking out the sun with the most Vampires you’ll see this side of Innistrad.

Blue/Red: Pirates’ Plunder – Artifact Aggro
For all of Wizards’ protesting that The Lost Caverns of Ixalan isn’t a typal set, we’ve got our third totally-not-typal archetype in Blue/Red artifact aggro, and its completely coincidenta꧑l ma🤡ssive number of Pirates. Sail for the Brazen Coalition as you amass all kinds of artifacts, and use them to shore up your crew.
The signpost here is Captain Storm, Cosmium Raider, who puts a +1/+1 counter on a Pirate whenever an artifact enters under your c🍒ontrol. This includes tokens, so of course the aim here is to m📖ake tons of Treasure and Map tokens to grow your Pirates nice and big.
Lots of Pirates care about you controlling artifacts, like Shipwreck Sentry, Brazen Blademaster, Goblin Tomb Raider, and Waylay🐎ing Pirates. Staunch Crewmate can pull artifacts or pirates out of your deck, while Oaken Siren can help you play artifacts for cheaper.
In true Pirate fashion, what you do with the artifacts doesn’t really matter – only that you have them. Dowsing Device is a great payoff for your hoarding, a𓃲s when it flips over into Geode Grotto, you can beef up one of your Pirates to dish out massᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚ𒀱ᩚᩚᩚive damage.
Black/Green: Fungal Festering – Descend Grindy
The third descending/descend arcဣhetype of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan slows things right down, using the graveyard to help you sta🌃ll your opponent through a difficult to manage board state that only gets better the bigger your graveyard grows.
Akawalli, the Seething Tower is your signpost for this, and can grow from a 3/3 right up ♛to a 7/7 that can’t be blocked byﷺ more than one creature. As Akawalli shows, this deck just wants creatures that are hard to remove until you’re able to get descend online, at which point you just drown them out with all kinds of graveyard-fuelled value.
Splash into red if you happen to 🍨find a Dinotomaton, as it can make Akwalli completely unblockable if you’re at the maximum level of desce🐲nd.
Broodrage Mycoid is great for this, as descending will reward you with 1/1 Fungus tokens. There’s༒ also Chupacabra Echo for removal, Deathcap Marionette for filling up your graveyard, and Coati Scavenger to pull things out of your graveyard should you have need of them again.
Red/White: Thousand-Moon Legion – Tapping Midrange
Red and white? In a midrange deck? Not aggro, equipments, or even ꧂Spirits? In a first for these colours, we’ve got a deck all about tapping permanents, whether it be your own for value or your opponents’ to control the board.
Caparocti Sunborn is the signpost for tapping, and highlights how this archetype is all about making sure you have enough permanents left over to pay in 🎶to all kinds of other tap outlets. Things like putting a +1/+1 counter on Adaptive Gemguard or Warden of the Sky, dealing damage with a Sunshot Militia, or buffing things up with Goldfurღy Strider.
There are also cards that want to be tapped. For instance, Volatile Wanderglyph lets you discard a card 💃to draw a card whenever it’s tapped, a♚nd Attentive Sunscribe scries for one. Thousand Moons Infantry is an excellent tool to grab as many copies as you can of, as it untaps on every untap step to let you keep on tapping it down for value even on your opponents’ turns.
Don’t ignore vigilant creatures, as they can be used to swing out without shutting yourself off from those tapping effect s. Vigilance is very uncommon in The Lost Caverns of I🌱xalan, but you’ve always got Miner’s Guide༒wing, Ojer Taq, and Warden of the Inner Sky to work with.
Blue/Green: River Herald Expedition – Explore Midrange
While not strictly a ramp deck, th♏e blue/green archetype can still get a ton of lands into play through frequent use of the Ixalan classic, exploring. Get lands into your hand, put counters on creatures, and, just to finish off the Ixalan creature types, play plenty of Merfolk in the process.
The signpost here is Nicanzil, Current Conductor, which really powers up your exploring, and turns it into true ramp by letting you put any land into play, or sharing the +1/+1 counters around the board. But they don’t explore on their own, and so you&rsquoꦆ;ll need to find other ways of doing it.
Fortunately, there’s lots of ways to do do just that. River Herald Scout, Cenote Scout, Glowcap Lantern, Seeker of Sunlight, Over the Edge, Deepfathom Echo, and River He✱rald Guide all offer ways of exploring, and with all the extra mana you’ll be getting through Nicanzil, you’ll have enough resources to possibly explore more t♛han once a turn.
Don’t forget Twists and Turns, an enchantment that lets yoꦐu scry before you explore to ensure yo๊u’re almost always exploring the way you want to.
Map tokens are also important. Brackish Blunder is one of the best control pieces for this deck, as it removes attackers, coun🏅ters the red and white archetype, and gives you a Map token to explore with. Sentinel of the Nameless City is a rare, but if you can get your hands on it, could really speed up your deck with Map tokens every time it attacks.
