Don’t get me wrong, Avalanche’s Mad Max isn’t a masterpiec🐽e, but it does a stellar job of nailing the tone and atmosphere of this post-apocalyptic world. It feels pulled from the screen at times, with the sandy horizons turning from harsh whites to blood-red depending on the time of the day, all as you burn rubber and blow up War Boys on your adventurꦑe.

It mixes together Arkham-inspi🌟red melee combat, excellent v🐬ehicle traversal, and a rewarding gameplay loop where you are constantly cementing Max’s grip on the wasteland.

Mad Max Doesn’t Reinvent The Wheel, But It Sure Is Fun To Take It

At the time, it was seemingly criticised for sticking too closely to the Ubisoft school of open world game design, in that you are given a big old map of things to do and no limits to how much you can do while progressing the main 💯narrative. These complaints are legitimate, and now I am playing it for the first time, it t𒀰akes a solid few hours to gain a few worthwhile skills and feel like you aren’t just ticking off checkboxes as you raid camps, scavenge for scrap, and duke it out with other motorheads despite not having many tools to do so.

But persevere for a few hours, and you will be invading towering strongholds, outfitting your car (known as the magnum opus) with all manner of cosmetic features and uꦍpgrades, along with meeting characters both new and familiar from the likes of Gastown and Bullet Farm.

You are encouraged to go anywhere and do anything, even if this curiosity is ultimately hindered by the need to play icon janitor across a beautifully ruined world. I grew up loving Mad Max, watching the original films with my dad and developing a fondness for the a💞pocalypse that Iꦕ never expected to be able to live out myself. Avalanche tried to make that possible, even if it was forced to create a specific type of game within a strict time frame, it still managed to put out a visually striking and mechanically competent gem that was dealt a bad hand.

Years later, fans seem to be rallying behind it, encouraging newcomers to give it a first or second chance. It was given away for free on PlayStation Plus and is sold for a few pennies on Steam in most sales, and works perfectly on the Deck to boot. We live in an era where open world games have shifted and changed dramatically, to the point where most of whওat Mad Max does incredibly well still feels archaic in retrospect. But as it pushes ten years old, this also gives it some sꦰort of nostalgic charm, a reminder of how the genre used to be wrapped up in a brilliantly executed licence of a property that is still going strong.
