I knew nothing about 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Lost Eidolons: Veil of the Witch going into my Gamescom preview last month, but after just 30 minutes, I was hooked. Through its tactical combat and focus on party building, this 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Fire Emblem-esque RPGღ fel𒊎t so warmly familiar, it was like coming home. Yet as I played more, it became clear that it could stand on its own two feet.

Lost Eidolons: Veil of the Witಌch starts with a pretty cliched premise, as you find out you’re an amnesiac who’s washed ashore on an unknown island. You make some pretty ꩵbasic character creator choices - choosing to play as a man or woman, and having some say in how they look - before you’re thrust into a battle you know little about.

On the face of it, ඣthe combat is derivative of other tactical RPGs - again, Fire Emblem - but that’s only at a foundational level. From here, it builds its own classes and abilities, and just minutes into my first battle, the similarities became easy to ignore.

An RPG Roguelite, Wrapped In Mystery

Each character has two fighting styles, usually melee and ranged, and within each style, they have different attacks at their disposal. That’s not always the rule though, a💃s my magic-user could also switch between damage and healing powers, adding yet another tool to my arsenal. Again, just like in something like Fire Emblem.

Once the fight was over, it was time to meet my companions. Two were thrown at me right out of the gate, then a couple more as I entered the first settlement. To my utter delight, stopping in a town let me slow down and enter dialogue with each of them, and even if this was fairly limited (poking them for some details about their past and what they think of our mission), it’s always a welcome feature in ga🏅mes like this. I didn’t get enough ဣof these opportunities in my demo to see if this would let me build a relationship with my companions, but the suggests that this will be possible, so I’m hopeful.

However, the bigge📖st departure that Veil of the Witch makes from other tactical RPGs is something I didn’t actually get to experience during my time with it: this is a roguelite. You’re supposed to die, die, and die again to progress the game’s story, as this is how your character’s memories return.

I didn’t die at all (because I’m the best) - something I can only apologize to the developer watching me play for. In fact, I didn’t even know this was a mechanic until I got back home and looked Veil of the Witch up on Steam. To my great shame, I am not exactly a fan of this genre, but I am a Hades lover, so at least the memories mechanic is reminiscent of my favourite feature from 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Supergiant’s maste𝔍rpiece - death is rewarded, not punished.

Without being able to experience it for myself however, the only roguelite mechanic ﷽I encountered was the traversal system. Getting from one place to another involved choosing between different paths, with the results of these generated at random. Results ranged from encounters with NPCs to different loot to encounter, but it was all fairly basic from what I saw. If anything, it was the dullest part of the game, and I found myself hoping to run into a fight. Perhaps I’ll feel differently on my fiftieth run.

Whatever the case, my brie𒁏f time with Veil of the Witch showed enough promise to get me over my distaste towards roguelites. The fact that I was hooked within minutes has me hopeful that dying over and over again won’t be frustrating but rewarding - esp꧂ecially as it unlocks more of the main character’s memories.

A demo is available on Steam now and is well worth trying out whether you’re a fan of roguelites or tactical RP♏Gs.💦 As someone very much in the latter camp, I can’t wait to dive back in and uncover the mystery that engrossed me from the very beginning.

WHERE TO PLAY

A remote island, besieged by the dead.
A shipwrecked traveler, plagued by lost memories.
A mysterious witch, in a realm between life and death.

Her motives are hazy. But the offer is simple: become her champion, and bring hell to her enemies. In exchange, you’ll gain a power others would kill for:

The chance to live again.

Now, cast headlong into a power struggle that threatens to upend the world, it's up to you to assemble your party, blaze a trail, and uncover the memories of your former life.

TURN-BASED TACTICAL ACTION
Craft your moves and crush your foes, with crunchy grid-based combat that's fast and mean. Face off against a variety of enemies, from crazed Imperial cultists to the flesh-hungry Fallen, most of whom will wreck your day before you can blink.

That is, unless you take advantage of all the tools at your disposal: persistent upgrades, environmental hazards, elemental interactions, weapon affinities, skill synergies, and more!

SHIFTING PATHS AND CHANCE EVENTS
The road to your enemies' door is long and treacherous, and no two journeys are alike. Choose your path and navigate choice-driven random encounters that can either lend you the advantage, or rip it cruelly away.

Tackle challenges your way, with 9 playable characters, dozens of persistent upgrades, over 200 unique skills, and 30+ game-changing Relics.

If at first you don't succeed: die, die again.

A TALE OF LOST SOULS
As you journey across the island, you'll meet a crew of misfits and killers battling demons of their own. Grow your bonds, learn their stories, and help them regain the things they've lost.

But it’s not all about other people. Each time you die, you’ll also collect new shards of your own memory, and slowly piece together the puzzle of the life you lost… and the man you came here searching 𒅌for…
