Di🉐sney Lorcana’s starter decks are easily its most forgettable product. Long after the Illumineer’s Troves are all gone and the booster boxes have been devoured, the lonely starter decks remain on store shelves, a mish-mash of random cards of ever-decr🀅easing value that most players and collectors have no use for.
🦄But starter decks are important for so many reasons, and a good starter deck can have a significant impact on the way an entire expansion is received. Luckily, the Stand Together starter deck from Ursula’s Return is one of, if not the best starter deck Lorcana has ever had.
Starter decks serve different purposes to different people. They might be someone’s first exposure to the game, so they have to be simple and easy to play, especially for young kids. But they’re also designed to showcase the new characters, strategies and mechanics featured in the expansion in order to represent what the new set has to offer. A lot of people play in starter deck events at the start of a s𝐆eason just to get a taste of what the new expansion is all about.
The most valuable starter decks function as a core you can build around. Rise of the Flood⛄born’s Amethyst/Steel starter deck, Might & Magic, is a great example of that. While the deck itself plays poorly, it has the structure of a full-fledged archetype that you can use to make a much more powerful deck. It has just enough pieces of the Madam Mim/Me💙rlin bounce package to give players a strong starting point. That was one of the best starter decks, but Stand Together is even better.
As starter decks often do, Stand Together leans heavily into a main theme of the newest expansion. Ursula’s Return is a narrative-driven set that brin൲gs the Disney’s heroes to the forefront with a whole host of new cards that synergize with characters that have the Hero classification. The theme of the starter deck is straightforward: the more heroes you play, the more value they generate for each other. This 60-card deck has 38 heroes in it, and almost all of the other cards are songs, items, and Allies that create some kind of benefit for heroes.
There hasn’t been a Hero deck archetype in Lorcana previously and there’s no telling whether or not it will be meta (typal decks have never been competitive before) but the new Hero synergies are obviously strong and worth experimenting with at the beginning of the season. There are three cards that will likely show up in every Hero deck: Philoctetes, No-Nonsense Instructor; Ling, Imperial Soldier; and the song One Last Hope. Other powerful new Hero cards include Anna, T𓂃rue Hearted and Anna, Braving the Storm. All of those cards are in this starter deck.

But it’s not just about the new build-around cards. Stand Together features an assortment of cards from past expansions, which is normally something I find frustrating about Lorcana’s starter decks. Here though, the reissued cards direct us to reexamine all of the old cards to find new synergies. It was never relevant that characters like Mickey Mouse, Detective and Robin Hood, Beloved Outlaw were Heroes, but now that might be a big deal. Maybe there’s some cards from the past that haven’t seen mu𓄧ch play that might be a lot more 🐻useful now that Heroes matter.
This is a perfect starter deck. It reveals some of the overarching design intention behind the new expansion, exposes players to powerful new strategies, and gives them something to experiment with and build on. It’s not gimmicky like the other typal starter decks. The Seven Dwarfs deck from Rise of the Floodborn and the Madrigal deck from this expansion aren’t worth investing in or building out unless you just want a fun theme deck. ꦉWith a little work, Stand Together is a de🦄ck you can bring to League and actually have a chance at winning.
I rate it even higher than Might & Magic. Its bounce package is great, but it’s completely linear. Once you finish collecting your Snakes, Foxes, Goats, Crabs, and Rabbits you have the complete package you can slot into most Amethyst decks and do well with. With over 200 Hero characters in just Sapphire and Steel, there are nearly i✤nfinite ways to build out the Stand Together deck. I can’t think of a better wa﷽y to kick off a new expansion than with a starter deck that inspires our creativity and imagination, and I hope every set can have a deck as good as Stand Together.
