The is a mod that players can add to their game to make a whole new monster appear inside the bases. The new monster in this mod, the Mimic, will place itself on a wall and copy the design of a fire exit, leaving a trap for unsuspecting players who want out.

How To Find The Fake Fire Exit
As you might've guessed from the monster's name, it's really hard to spot the Mimic's fake fire exit until it is seconds away from swallowing you. If you hold 'E' and the door opens with an animation, it's already too late for you.
You can't scan Mimics like you can other monsters, which makes that method of identification ineffective against them.
The best way to know which fire exit is real is to enter through one on a level you know. For example, Experimentation only has one fire exit, so you'll know which one is real as long as you can remember where you came from.
In the mod's description, the developer states that there are multiple ways to distinguish between real and fake, although they don't say more. Some of these methods require specific equipment to increase the agitation of the monster.
Try the following methods to identify the threat:
- Hit the door with a shovel or sign.
- Spray the door with the spray can.
- Make loud noises using horns and boom boxes.
When the Mimic is angered, it will briefly change the hand above the 'Exit' prompt to a middle finger and start to make a growling noise. However, when angered too much, it can decide to eat the nearest player, so it's likely better to avoid them once identified.
If you annoy the door three times, it will immediately snap open and consume you, so be careful when looking for it.
