Tommy is one of the few characters in the 𒊎Last of Us that you get a glimpse of in the moments leading up to the end of the world. He arrives in the prologue to help his brother and niece - Joel and Sarah - evacuate their hometown, but tragedy and time eventually separate him from his family.
It's unclear exactly how much time has passed since they last spoke, but at a certain point, it becomes clear to Joel that he will need help from his estranged brother if he wants to find the Fireflies. He quickly loses consciousness as Ellie escorts him out of the building.
One of The Last of Us's biggest twists is the sudden time jump after this moment and revealing that you will be playing as Ellie while Joel recovers. The two have bonded significantly since they first met, and the fact that Ellie is willing to hunt and search for medicine for an almost-dead Joel proves how much they rely on each other at this point. It's incredible to see how far they would go for each other, even if it means putting their own lives on the line.

To say Joel and Ellie had a harrowing and terrifying journey across America would be an understatement. After facing countl♌ess hoards of infected monsters and enduring confrontations with other survivors, the two finally reach their destination after almost a year of traveling together.
As they approach the hospital in Salt Lake City they believe the Fireflies are hiding, Ellie notices something in the distance and begins running ahead of Joel. He struggles to catch up to her but is eventually in awe as they find a giraffe eating some foliage close by. They follow it and find a small herd of giraffes outside, living their best lives in a concrete jungle. It's a beautiful moment that feels like the calm before the final storm, and it also gives Joel and Ellie the inspiration they need to finish their journey together.
