Here's how to get started leveling a fresh Sen𓆏tinel in Last Epoch.
While definitely not as popular as the Paladin or Void Knight, the Forge Guard can be incredibly strong wi൲th the right setup. If you want to level through the campaign with this Mastery, you've come to the right place. Below, we'll take a look at a beginner-friendly build for the Forge Guard.
Build Overview
Pros |
Cons |

|
This build utilizes two of the Forge Guard's Throwing Skills, Hammer Throw and Shield Throw, to blow through groups of enemies and stay alive with high block chance and sustain. Smite and Symbols of Hope provide buffs and healing, while Shield Rush offers great mobility and a bit of extra damage.
This builꦗd's general playstyle involves moving between packs using Shield Rush, then throwing out waves of hammers with Hammer Throw, which is first Specialized to h💙ave the Hammers orbit around you, but later on makes them throw out in waves from you, dealing more damage.
Shield Throw is used as a much-needed single-target DPS Skill, which Hammer Throw can lack with this setup. That said, this build has generally low single-target damage, so taking down bosses or high-health enemies m🍌ay take a bit longer. This is more than made up for by its excellent pack-clearing a𓆉bilities, though.
Skills And Passive
Hammer Throw is unlocked at level three, and will be our main form of damage. In its Skill Specialization tree, first unlock the Catapult and Avatar of the Spire nodes to make Hammer Throw spiral where they are thrown, hitting enemies multiple times when they spiral.
On the left side of the tree, get the Iron Spiral and Hammer Vortex nodes, making your Hammers spiral around you and orbit you as you move. The Zealot's Conviction node is also a good increase to damage. Finally, unlock the Enra's Technique node to remove all spiraling and orbiting, instead causing the Hammers to be thrown out in a fan pattern in all directions from you.
Mana Starved Forging will let you cast Hammer Throw for free when you're out of Mana.
The next skill you unlock and the next you should Specialize in is Shield Rush. In this skill tree, start by reducing Shield Rush's Mana cost by maxing out Rush Mastery, then get Protective Speed and Unstoppable Charge for added defense and utility. Then, put points into Consuming Path and Warrior's Entrance for more damage.
Once you unlock Forge Guard, Specialize in Shield Throw, and unlock Siege Breaker, Defender's Rage, Throwing Arm, and Colossus as your first skill tree nodes. Aeroplates, Vampiric Steel, and Hemrin's Technique provide some sustain to Shield Throw and let it ricochet more, increasing its overall damage.
Put the rest of this tree's points into Fleet of Foot for more movement speed after u🌱sing Shield Throw.
Next up is Smite, which will be used for additional damage and sustain. In Smite's skill tree, first get Desperate Measures to let Smite be cast for free when you're out of Mana, then Soothing Balm to Regen Health and Mana after using Smite. Put the rest of your points into Righteous Fury and Righteous Flurry for more damage.
Finally, after you've allocated 15 points to the Paladin Passive Tree, you'll unlock Symbols of Hope, which provides a few different buffs. In this Skill's tree, start on the right side with Iron Symbols, Enduring Hope, Tetragram, Meditation, and Sign of the Guardian. Then, unlock Quiet Mind, Invigorate, Polygram, Empowering Symbols, and Heavenly Justice on the right side of the tree.
Passive Trees
This build uses both the Forge Guard and Paladin passive trees, with the minimum 20 points in Sentinel. In the Sentinel tree, start by maxing out Juggernaut to increase your Strength, then add points into Armour Clad to max it out. Put one point each into Fearless and Stalwart to unlock Time and Faith, then max out this node.
Once you have Forge Guard unlocked, start by putting three points into Steel Aegis and two into Weapons Master to unlock Shield Throw. Then, you'll want to put 15 points into the Paladin tree to unlock this build's final skill, Symbols of Hope.
In the Paladin tree, max out Conviction, then put a few points into Defiance and Honor until you hit 15.
Back in the Forge Guard tree, you'll want to start unlocking important damage nodes like Fresh from the Forge, Siege Captain, Hammer and Anvil, and Might. The Iron Reflexes path is also strong, which includes Iron Reflexes, Crusader, and Javelineer. Be sure to also unlock Walls of Solarum for a big boost to defense.
For cheap Resistances, you can put a few points into the Void Knight passive Abyssal Endurance, which grants Health, Void Resistance, and Physical Resistance. This node has very high value for low investment, so use this to max your Resistances if necessary.
Stats And Uniques
Luckily, this build is quite easy to gear, with the potential for much higher damage with a few Uniques. Since Hammer Throw and Shield Throw are your main damaging abilities, increases to Throwing Damage and Throwing Attack Speed 🍸will be suitable for the entire leveling process.
Additionally, Hammer Throw and Shield Throw both scale off of Strength a♊nd Dexterity, so buffing up these stats will also increase your damage.
For survivability, be sure to increase your Resistances as you level, and stacking more Health is good, too. Block Chance is also very valuable for this build, which also scales well with the Walജls of Solarum passive.
On your Idols, You'll want to get two Adorned Rahyeh Idosl (the two by two one) with the Chance to Cast Smite on hit with Throwing Attacks stat. This will greatly increase your damage, Mana regen📖eration🌄, and survivability.
In the rest of your Idol slots, you can fit four Large Rahyeh Idols with the Throwing Critical Strike Multiplier and Chance to apply Shred Armor on Throwing Hit multipliers. These aren't as necཧessary as the Smite on Throwing Hit stats, but can provide a decent chunk of extra damage.
Here's how you s⛎hould prioriti♛ze your offensive stats for this build.
- Throwing Damage
- Throwing Attack Speed
- Level of Hammer Throw
- Dexterity
- Strength
- Critical Strike Chance
- Critical Strike Multiplier
And here's how you should prior🌜itize your defensive stats🗹.
- Health
- Block Chance
- Endurance
- Resistances (prioritize Physical for campaign)
Uniques
While this build is very easy to gear, t🌠here are a few Uniques that can take it to the next level, and a few of th💮em can be obtained relatively early on.
Firestarter's Torch starts dropping at level one, making it extremely common from early-game Nemesis encounters. This Sceptre has a chance to inflict Spreading Flame with each hit, which deals high damage over time. Th♒🏅is weapon will also reduce the Mana cost for Fire spells like Smite.
Bleeding Heart is a great early-game Unique that can help with sustain until you unlock Smite, while Uniques like Thorn Slinger and Riverbend Grasp increase the effectiveness of your Throwing attacks, making them great to have around.
If you find a Sigeon's Reprisal Unique Shield, you can unlock the full potential of this build. This shield gives you a chance to automatically use Shield Throw when you're hit, and it increases the damage of Shield Throw for every ten Damage Reflected to Attackers stat you have.
Using Small Weaver Idols, you can stack this stat pretty high, greatly increasing Shield Throw's damage for a bit of investment. If you happen to get Sigeon's Reprisal, stack this stat as high as you can get it and watch Shield Throw blow through 💯the rest of the campaign.
