We'll help you get off to a strong start by helping you to understand the tools that are available to you and the best way to use them. I most certa🐭inly made a number of mistakes during my playthrough, so I'm eager to help you avoid my fumbles.

All Units Have A Role To Play

It is easy to write off the Woodcutter and the Archer once you start unlocking the more powerful melee classes and further reaching ranged classes. However, they are far from being rendered redundant. You will often need to be economical with your crystal usage, and both starter classes are dirt cheap.

However, more than that, once upgraded, they are still quite effective. In fact, in some situations, they can be better than their more expensive counterparts. A team of Woodcutters are going to be better for swarming foes than their harder-hitting, but slower, Sumo Wrestler compatriots. That's because the Sumo Wrestler's primary job is to tank attacks. Don't be afraid to invest in thos𒁃e early classes, 🥃as they will absolutely have a role to play all the way to the last stages in the game.

Consider Remapping Your Controls

Look, if you want to play the game with the default controls, I wouldn't blame you. It is how the developers intended it to be, right? Well, here is the thing, the default controls have your dodge roll mapped to the left thumbstick. That dodge is invincibl♉e and plays a pretty important role in combat, so you will want it mapped to a button that you can press at a moment's notice.

When you need an invincible dodge, and you need it now, do you really want to be fumbling with a thumbstick? Obviously, there are other things you can tweak as well, but the dodge button is definitely the one you should give the most attention to. Y🌠ou will need it throughout your time♔ with the game.

I mapped the dodge t🌊o a face button and made pressing the thumbstick in bring up the villager command menu. That control scheme worked wonders for me.

Spirit Path Management

The goal of every stage is to get Yoshiro from Point A to Point B. In order to do that, you'll need to carve a path for her. There are two elements that you will need to consider: Yoshiro's travel distance, and the crystals needed to carve the path. The transparent Yoshiro at the end of the path will tell you if she is going to be able to make it to the end in time. If she is blue, you are good. If the spirit is white, she's not going to make it. So, you need to look for a strong position to hunker her down🌌. Preferably, beh꧒ind a barrier (that you will likely have to rebuild with your carpenter companion).

Even once you have unlocked Mazo Talismans that can ღhelp the carpenter build faster, you aren't going to be able to repair all the obstructions and traps. So, choose a spot where you are going to park Yoshiro early and rebuild everything around that position.

The second factor is the crystal cost. This won't be an issue early in the game, but you will need to be conscious of your crystal usage once you start unlocking more expensive classes. Each stage has a set number of Seethe Defilements. Once you have purged one, it is gone. It is absolutely possible to be close enough to the end of the stage to finish, only to run out of crystals. And if you just barely run out, that can leave Yoshiro very close to where all the Seethe are going to spawn. You don't want to be stuck in that situation. Before you spend big on your villagers, carve that path!

Using The Oka Uppercut Attack Effectively

You will start the game having access to a number of Oka Dance attacks. While all of these attacks serve a purpose, the shoryuken-esque flying uppercut attack is quite possibly the move with the most utility. This is performed by 🐎pressing the Attack button once and then following it with the Dance Att🎃ack button. There are a number of reasons you'll want to use this attack...

  • It doesn't move Soh forward, making it a great attack to use when you are surrounded by hazards.
  • It hits above your head, and has a surprisingly large hitbox, making it an effective attack for dealing with flying enemies.
  • It is relatively low-commitment.

From the first stage to the last, this attack is consistently great for positioning. Similarly, it is way better at clearing out flying enemies than the bow, so I was using it to take ou𓆏🔴t flying enemies on the regular, even in the final stages of the game. Don't sleep on the shoryuken!

Thieves Will Pay For Themselves

One of the earlier classes you will unlock is the Thief. This is a non-combatant class, and thus, will provide no value in battle. However, outside of battle, the Thief is vital for digging up chests and picking locks.

Those chests will typically have hundreds of crystals in them. This means that it is worth spending the 50 crystals to change a villager into a Thief, and then change them back into a more useful unit during the night. The moment you acquire this class, you should unlock their Locksmith ability. It will only cost you 30 Musubi to do so.

If you fully upgrade the Thief, they will scurry around the battlefield and collect stray crys♊tals for you, but you are probably better off swapping the class out for a un🌊it that can fight instead.

Utilizing Tsuba Guard Special Attacks Efficiently

It is likely that your first instinct will be to use your Tsuba Guard attacks as a sort of panic button. While this is certainly not a terrible idea, there is one thing you should consider: your Tsuba Guard attacks will recharge. What that means is that if you use one of these attacks early, you will have it again before the end of the night. Furthermore, if you have a massive number of enemi✅es flood through one gate, while an army of Seethe stomps through another, yo♏u're likely to have your defenses take a hefty hit.

I would recommend that you use a Tsuba Guard special on the first notable threat you encounter. It will likely put you in a better position for later in the night. This becomes even more true once you get access to an additional Tsuba🐷 Guard, as they all have their own energy stores, meaning you can hold onto one as a panic but𒐪ton.

Make Use Of The Map

During the more linear levels, it is pretty easy to keep track of what Seethe are coming and going. However, as the game progresses, you will encounter more stages that feature multiple branching paths for Seethe to follow. The end result is that you could very well be half a mile awaꦬy from Yoshiro only to hear her crying out for help because sh✤e has been swarmed by baddies. Not good.

Thankfully, you always have access to a map that will pause the action and show you what enemies are currently on the stage. Don't ta🍒ke this feature for granted, it is a great way to track everything that is going on✃.

Plan Around The Chozusha Basin

This isn't going to be important until you complete the sixth mission of the game and unlock Soh's skill tree. However, once you do, you will be able to spend 20 Musubi and unlock Soh's Worship ability. This will make all the Basins you've been encountering throughout the game central to your strategy. Once you use it, you will become faster, stronger, and become invincible. You can only use the Chozusha Basin once a night. So, like with the Tsuba Guard Specials, you are going to want to pick your shots. However, Chozusha Basin's location will also determine when you can use it.

Once you have unlocked the Worship ability, you should start considering where the Chozusha Basin is when deciding where to defend Yoshiro. If the Chozusha Basin is extremely far away from where you have set up your defenses, you may want to consider starting the night close to the Chozusha Basin and using it early. Early is better than never. The blessing you get from the Chozusha Basin is quite simply too powerful to not use.
