It helped create an incomprehensible mess that never bothered to explain itself, and only the most hardcore fans are patient enough to unwind all its lingering threads. I’m one of those fans, or at least, I have tried my very best since playing the first game as a kid.
Like most people, I didn’t own every single platform under the sun when I was younger, but that didn’t stop Square Enix from releasing Kingdom Hearts titles across PS2, DS, GBA, and PSP, with ever🐼y single narrative and character tying into a single main story. The years that followed didn’t let up either, and won’t before Kingdom Hearts 4 rolls around. I bet some nonsense in the mobile game will be cru﷽cial in the future sequel, and I will absolutely love it.
That brings me to recent rumours 🌠that a Disney+ original series or animated film based on the property is in the works, and what exactly that will mean for the wider canon? Will it be prese🎶nted as a fresh experience for newcomers, or will it continue building on the story we’ve followed for over twenty years at this point💟? Could it somehow do both🌱? There’s no way to know.
What I do hope for, however, is that this series stays true to what Kingdom Hearts is known for. Despite its ridiculousꦯ anime melodrama and opaque mixture ofꦗ crossover elements, it’s always been lovingly earnest about the emotions it hopes to conjure in its players. Possibly it’s because all of its biggest fans are children at heart who don’t want to grow up, but I can’t think of a single diehard Kingdom Hearts fan who doesn’t recognise its apparent flaws, and is still all in on everything it has to offer.
The protagonist Sora is all about doing right by his friends and wear🧸ing his heart on his sleeve, even if it leads him into dangerous situ💙ations. So long as he does what’s right in the end, none of that matters. That’s a great principle to abide by, since life is much too short to be mean, cynical, or negative without a proper cause for it.
That isn’t to say that Kingdom Hearts isn’t afraid to explore hardship and trauma. It does so all the time, either through the classic Disney plotlines it recreates or the trials of its three spiky-haired teenagers who find themselves taken away from home and made to go up against the world. You need a reasonable suspension of disbelief to buy into this, but it’s no more absurd than ♒other JRPGs we’ve come to treat with reverence. Howeverꦐ, whether it can be translated into a film or television show remains to be seen. It could go very wrong.
The closest comparison point is Final Fantasy, which has been adapted for film a few times. Advent Children, The Spirits Within, and Kingsglaive are all varying shades of not very good, largely because they seek to tell massive stories with dozens of characters within the length of a traditional film, whereas the games that inspired them take dozens of hours to complete. You’re expected to ha💖ve knowledge of the source material, or patience to accept that not everything is going to be explained. That’s fine in games where sequels and wikis can soon clear things up, but not in media like this. It’s why none of those films are remembered all that fondly, as much as a diehard fan like me might like them.
Would it be better to cast asid💯e the established characters and canon and do something entirely different? It would anger a lot of people, myself included, but part of me prefers that to something safe and neutered. My ultimate wish is for Square Enix and Disney to lean right into the nonsense and create a film and/or series that tie🐽s into future games and doesn’t bother explaining a thing. Commit to the bit, or abandon the bit altogether.

Concluding the Dark Seeker Saga, Kingdom Hearts 3 is an actio⛦n RPG from Square Enix. It sees Sora once again team up with Donald Duck, Goofy, King Mickey and Riku in order to stop Xehanort from e꧟nacting his dastardly plan.
