There are a lot of things I expect going into a show like PAX East. I expect to be packed in with gamers, a🍷s tight as sardines. I expect to overpay for under♓whelming food, which is why I came prepared with Pop Tarts and Uncrustables this year. And, obviously, I expect to play some really cool games.
What I didn't expect was that when I played Killer Klowns from Outer Space, it would be shoulder to shoulder with the guys who made the original film. But that was exactly what happened when I took my place at a monitor at the Illfonic booth on the showfloor. As I stepped into the oversized shoes of one of the asymmetric multiplayer game's titular extraterrestrial entertainers, Stephen Chiodo (co-writer, producer, and director), Charles Chiodo (co-writer, producer, production designer, and actor), and Edward Chiodo (producer) were all there playing, too.
Killer Klowns From Outer Space: Following Up A Cult Hit
The original film was inexpensive, costing $1.8 million, but even with such a small budget, it made next to nothing at the box office. In the 36 years since, though, the horror comedy has taken on cult status,💃 and is widely beloved by those who have come across it on home video and at midnight screenings✅.
"Despite the [ridiculousness] of the title, Killer Klowns from Outer Space, the basic instruction to the actors and anybody involved with it [was that] that they had to play it absolutely serious," Edward told me. "This was a dea🍨dly monster despite its cosmetic, comedic veneer. It was a life and death situation."
The Hillside Level In Killer Klowns From Outer Space
That balancing act between serious and silly makes the franchise a good fit for this kind of asymmetric multiplayer game, the kind that weighs the thrill of being hunted by a monstrous killer against the joy of hearing your friends laugh over a headset. In the search for horror franchises that can support Illfonic's style of multiplayer, it makes sense that Killer Klowns would eventually get dusted off and brought back to life.
"We were told, 'We don't want to do a sequel.' They weren't interested in it because it didn't make a lot of money when it was first released. Well, neither did Nightmare Before Christmas, or many movies," says Charlie. "So it had to prove itself with the fan base… and when it started making money with merchandising and stuff, there was more interest. Unfortunately, money drives development."
Killer Klowns From Outer Space: Asymmetrical Apocalypse
Now that the franchise has moved to gaming, Stephen says that there's a possibility for a longer tail, as games have more wiggle room than a film's opening weekend to find their footing with fans. After having a great time with the game, and successfully bringing about the Klownpocalypse with my fellow interstellar jesters, that seems like a distinct possibility.
As one of the Klowns, my mission was to stalk through the level, a carnival, hunting down the human players as I went. My Klown had a laser gun that I needed to keep pointed at a human for a certain period of time. If I did that successfully, they got transformed into a cotton candy cocoon, which I could pick up and carry back to a machine where their energy would be extracted and put towar🔜d antic armage🐷ddon.

Though the gameplay is completely in keeping with Illfonic's previous titles (168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Predator: Hunting Grounds, 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Friday the 13th: The Game), development actually began at Teravision Games, a lesser known studio based in Bogota, Colombia. Illfonic came onboard less than a year ago as co-developer and publisher. But the gameplay Teravision had cooking and the Chiodos' franchise both seemed like a perfect fit.
"These guys have made such an amazing thing that really fits everything that we were about when it comes to the gameplay. So to be able to kind of tap into that and get working on it has been so much fun," says Jordan Mathewson, design director at Illfonic. "This one's so perfect because there's a lot of things that allowed us to extend outside of what asymmetry has been explored to at this point."
Mathewson says that the game's 3-vs-7 set-up is a fun new wrinkle to the formula.
The Chiodos say they’d always wanted to explore more of their universe, too. And, for Klown🧸 konnoisseurs who want the same, picking up the game when it launches on ཧJune 4 is a way that you can vote with your dollar.
"For the fans who want to see a sequel of any kind, I'd say playing the game and being an advocate for us is going to show that it's not a cult film," says Stephen. "In fact, it's a pop culture phenomenon, and that's going to help us get bigger and more Klowns going your way."
