Watching the new trailer for 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Joker: Folie a Deux, I had two thoughts. Firstly, that it looked great, and secondly, that it looked a lot like ܫThe Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Joker is an odd movie in that it draws in the comic book movie crowd, but operates as a serious drama - and reaps the rewards for both as it earned over a billion and saw Joaquin Phoenix win an Oscar for his role.

Because it sits in this middle ground, I'm hopeful that iᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ⁤⁤⁤⁤ᩚ𒀱ᩚᩚᩚt can encourage an audience typically resistant to new ideas or 'consuming media' outside of their bubble to be a little experimental. The obvious port of call here then, would be The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Looking like another movie is not a criticism. La La Land also borrows heavily from The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, while the first Joker drew copious inspiration from The King of Comedy, essentially mixing its premise with the Bernie Goetz story.

Joker Should Be A Start, Not An End, To Our Craving For Stories

The Joker Shot Of Joaquin Phoenix As Joker

Joker is loudly misunderstood by some of its biggest fans, and as a result has become a punching bag in various internet echo chambers, but I still consider it to be an excellent movie and I'm thrilled the sequel is finally arriving. The fact it is a jukebox musical starring Lady Gaga also shows it understands itseꦐlf perfectly and wants to challenge, rather than playing up the Joker as a broken mastermind of masculinity as many of these aforementioned loud fans see him as.

I'm always passionate about people casting a wider lens over the media landscape than the trending topic or the safety of formula. 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:This is an issue that rears its head every time someone praises a comic book movie or a video game television adaptation - 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:Bill and Frank in 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:The Last of Us is the most recent example. It's great that people love these things and are moved by them. I wouldn't be in this j🦩ob if I didn't think video games or superheroes were capable of moving, heartfelt storytelling. But we should view these as gateways into deeper narrative rivers, instead of (as so many do) taking pride in their limitations, damming themselves off to discovering new things with fresh ideas.

And it's not even that I think Joker, or The Last of Us, or [name any comic book or ⛦video game adaptation that you like], is inherently shallow. No matter what genre first connects with you, the curiosity of the human spirit should compel you⛦ to want to explore deeper. Two of my favourite romantic movies are In the Mood for Love and Portrait of a Woman on Fire, but as they're both foreign movies, both longer than the average romantic flick, both more subtle in their exposition and aching in their longing, and without a fairy tale romance of a wedding finale, these are not movies I'd necessarily suggest to someone who asked me for romantic movie recommendations.

Joker Folie A Deux Is A Twisted Love Story

Of course, you don't need to earn the right to watch a movie - I'd love if just one reader went and watched those movies off the back of my suggestion - but most genres have layers to them, and𝓰 there is an alternative between floating on the surface and plunging into the depths. My go-to recommendations for romance would be Four Weddings and a Funeral and The Notebook, then I might move to Silver Linings Playbook and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, then The Apartment and Amelie, then Brooklyn and His Girl Friday, then In a Lonely Place and The Worst Person in the World, then In the ꦰMood for Love and Portrait of a Woman on Fire.

I don't think this is a strict pattern and wouldn't warn people off watching them 'out of order'. You shouldn’t have to do homework to enjoy a piece of media, and if someone told me they wanted something like The Notebook I wouldn't jump ten layers deep into obscure romantic cinema. But there’s depth to every single genre that is worth exploring, rather than 💞stopping at the first port of call.

I'm already annoyed with myself at the dozens of movies I've left out here: Her, Call Me by Your Name, Lost in Translation, Funny Face, The Shape of Water, The Seven Year Itch, Brokeback Mountain, Bones and All, Vertigo, Carol, Palm Springs, Wild at Heart, Charade, Before Sunrise, Decision to Leave, DEBS, It Happened One Night, Bringing Up Baby... I hope, at least for some people, Joker: Folie a Deux introduces them to 168澳洲幸运5开奖网:the vast array of romantic movies that go bey🦄ond the confines of the Hugh Grant romcom.

I have never been one to turn my nose up at Joker. Yes, it is sometimes a little obvious and despite that has still been misunderstood, but while others scoff at the idea, I do think it's important to tell stories that centre men pushed to violence and vengeance by a society that beats them to the floor and kicks them when they're down. Thousands of people identifying with Joker is not them missing the point, it ꩵis the point - Joker, for all the ridiculous make-up and the more extreme versions found in the comic books, is a very real idea.

In Folie a Deux, we see (as the title translates to) that madness shared, and it moves this symbol of hypermasculinity into romance. It's a bold direction for the character and has a freshness that comic book movies sorely need. And it feels unique because of that, as most comic book movies with love stories just feature a girl who doesn't want the hero to go off and get hurt but then needs saving herself. Even more modern, girl power iterations of🗹 these characters operate in the same way, except the girl kicks the bad guy in the crotch and helps save herself.

But Joker is a true romantic story, an exploration of two damaged souls against a backdrop of colour and music. And to ꦅa lo🧸t of people, it might seem like that hasn't really been done before. But it has. They called it The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. If you're excited for Joker: Folie a Deux (or if you're finding this article months later having loved Joker: Folie a Deux), give The Umbrellas of Cherbourg a try. If that's a bridge too far, check out La La Land first.
